India’s T20 World Cup plans are in flux. While Jasprit Bumrah has returned to full bowling intensity, star opener Abhishek Sharma remains hospitalised with "tummy issues." Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate remains hopeful for his return, but "Plan B" is already in motion. Rumours suggest Sanju Samson is being prepped to take over the opening slot for the February 15 clash against Pakistan.
As the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 shifts gears toward Delhi, the Indian dressing room is witnessing a tale of two extremes. On one hand, the "Boom-Boom" rhythm of Jasprit Bumrah has returned to haunt batters in the nets. On the other hand, the team’s explosive opener, Abhishek Sharma, is currently facing a race against time—and a stubborn stomach bug.
With the crucial India vs. Pakistan clash just four days away on February 15, here is the latest from the Indian camp as of February 11, 2026.
After missing the tournament opener against the USA due to viral fever, Jasprit Bumrah is officially back on his feet. The pace spearhead was the centre of attention during Tuesday's practice session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed the positive news, stating that Bumrah has been bowling after his short break and is "feeling a lot better." His return is a massive psychological boost for the Men in Blue, especially given the high-stakes nature of the upcoming fixtures in Colombo.
While one star returns, another is battling to stay in the squad. Abhishek Sharma, currently the World No. 1-ranked T20I batter, has been hospitalised in New Delhi due to a severe stomach infection.
Reports suggest that the 25-year-old was struggling even in the first game against the USA, when he was dismissed for a golden duck and did not take the field in the second innings. His condition reportedly worsened after a team dinner on Sunday, leading to his admission to a private hospital on Monday.
Ryan ten Doeschate addressed the concerns during a media interaction:
"Abhi [Abhishek Sharma] has still got a few issues with his tummy. We are hopeful that he'll be available for the game in a few days."
The Indian think-tank isn't taking any chances. If Abhishek Sharma isn't 100% fit, rumours from the camp suggest that "Plan B" is already being prepped for the high-pressure opening slot.
Sanju Samson: After a stellar domestic season and consistent IPL performances, Samson is a top contender. His ability to take on pace early in the powerplay makes him a natural fit for the aggressive role Abhishek usually plays.
With India set to face Namibia on February 12, the management is unlikely to risk a half-fit Abhishek. This opens the door for Sanju Samson, who was seen putting in extra work in the nets alongside Ishan Kishan.
The primary goal for the medical team is to ensure Abhishek is discharged and recovered in time for the February 15 blockbuster against Pakistan. With the "decks cleared" diplomatically for that match, India wants its most dangerous opening pair fully fit to take on the old rivals.
