Brisbane, December 19, 2025: In a game that defied the laws of probability and physics, the Brisbane Heat pulled off the greatest run chase in Big Bash League history on Friday night. Facing a gargantuan target of 258 against the Perth Scorchers at the Gabba, the Heat stormed to a miraculous eight-wicket victory with just one ball to spare, leaving 25,000 fans in absolute disbelief.
The match, already being hailed as the "Greatest T20 Game Ever Played," saw records tumble like tenpins as Brisbane became the first team in T20 history to have two centurions in a single innings while chasing.
The evening began with a bloodbath for the bowlers. Perth Scorchers, batting first, looked to have ended the contest by the halfway mark. Spearheaded by Finn Allen (79 off 38) and young sensation Cooper Connolly (77 off 37), the visitors hammered 17 sixes to post a franchise-record 257/6. At the innings break, even the most optimistic Heat fans were preparing for a heavy defeat, as no BBL team had ever successfully chased more than 230.
What followed was a batting display for the ages after the early loss of Colin Munro, Matt Renshaw and Jack Wildermuth joined forces to stitch together a breathtaking 212-run partnership.
Renshaw, who survived an early scare when he was caught off a no-ball on 20, played with a "nothing-to-lose" aggression. He reached his century in just 50 balls, eventually falling for 102 off 51, including nine massive sixes. His departure briefly slowed the momentum, but Wildermuth refused to let the dream die.
Jack "The Wild-Beast" Wildermuth delivered an unbeaten 110 off 54 balls, showcasing nerves of steel. Despite struggling with what appeared to be a leg cramp in the final overs, Wildermuth continued to clear the ropes with ease.
The drama reached a fever pitch in the final over. With Max Bryant retiring hurt due to a dislocated shoulder, the Heat needed two runs off the final two deliveries. Amidst the deafening roar of the Gabba crowd, Wildermuth stayed cool, steering Aaron Hardie through point for a brace to seal the win.
This victory is now the third-highest successful run chase in the history of Men’s T20 cricket, trailing only the Punjab Kings (262) and South Africa (259).
For the Brisbane Heat, this wasn't just a win—it was a statement. On a night where 515 runs were scored and 36 sixes cleared the fence, the BBL proved why it remains the ultimate theater of T20 entertainment.
