Yesterday, Jannik Sinner clinched his second career Grand Clam after defeating Taylor Fritz at the US Open Final. This US Open triumph was Sinner’s second Grand Slam victory of the year after winning the 2024 Australian Open in January.
Jannik Sinner defeated the likes of Tommy Paul, Daniil Medvedev and Jack Draper to set a US Open finals showdown against home hero Taylor Fritz. However, Fritz couldn’t capitalize on home advantage, as Sinner defeated the American 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 to claim his 2nd Grand Slam. The 23-year-old dominated the proceedings with his relentless energy and clean baseline hitting. Sinner just remained everyone why he has climbed the ranks in world tennis to the No.1 seed over the past 18 months. The Italian has now won six titles in a remarkable 2024 season, which has seen him move 4,105 points clear of his nearest challenger Alexander Zverev in the battle to claim ATP Year-End No.1.
The iconic Auther Ashe Arena was in full voice, supporting home hero, Taylor Fritz. The 26-year-old was the first American to compete in the US Open final since 2006. However, he was no match for Sinner’s youthful exuberance and energy. The 23-year-old made just 21 unforced errors across three sets. Jannik Sinner’s victory has highlighted that tennis is pivoting towards a new era, as both Sinner and Carlos Alcarez have won two Grand Slams each in 2024. Remarkably, it is the first time since 1993 that every Grand Slam has been won by a player 23 years or younger. “It’s nice to see for the sport some new champions. I feel like the new generation we push each other, trying to improve,” Sinner told ESPN.
Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka defeated home favorite Jessica Peluga 7-5, 7-5 to the women’s US Open. This victory was Sabalenka’s third career Grand Slam after winning the Australian Open in 2023 and 2024. Meanwhile, Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson won the men’s double title, defeating German duo Tim Putz and Kevin Krawietz 6-4, 7-6. In the women’s double finals, Jelena Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok defeated Zhang Shuai and Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the US Open title. Elsewhere, Americans Donald Young and Taylor Townsend lost to Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori in Mixed doubles final by 7-6, 7-5.
