Liverpool have been one of the best teams in England for the past decade, and a key reason for that success has been Virgil van Dijk. But with less than a year remaining on his contract, many Liverpool fans are fearing the worst. However, the 33-year-old defender has come out and stated that he’s in talks with Liverpool’s management over a contract extension.
During a recent interview, the Dutch defender did admit he has held talks of a contract extension with the Reds, but he also did not commit his future to the club. He said, “I can say obviously discussions are ongoing, but I don't know, we will see what happens in the future. My very full focus is on Liverpool, wanting to win games that are ahead of me and nothing else. What the future will bring I have no idea at the moment. I can only tell you that discussions have been started up and we will see.” Van Dijk further stated that, “I feel very good, physically, mentally and I am having fun. Discussions are ongoing with the right people and when it's time to make a decision or whatever, I think you guys [the media] will know it as well. But now full commitment and focus is on Liverpool and to be successful this season. So, we will see."
Apart from uncertainty surrounding Virgil Van Dijk’s future, the Reds also have to deal with expiring contracts of Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold. The latter has attracted significant interest from Real Madrid. According to several reports, Los Blancos are aiming to tie down Trent to a pre-contract agreement in January. However, with Trent being a boyhood Liverpool fan, many people expect him to sign an extension with Liverpool. Meanwhile, Mo Salah has garnered several admiring glances during his Liverpool career, but none more persistent than from Saudi Arabia. The Egyptian star has been a target for several Saudi Pro League clubs, with Al Ittihad even making a massive €150 million bid for him last summer. Despite the lucrative offer, Salah chose to remain at Anfield. However, with less than a year left on his current contract, clubs could swoop in and sign the Liverpool talisman on a free transfer as early as this winter window.
Such reports have prompted new Liverpool boss Arne Slot to say that his players aren’t distracted by such speculations. He said, “If you think they're disturbed by this interest then you don't do justice to how strong they are mentally. This is part of our job. This is part of this world we are living in. You just focus on what you have to do. Maybe if you're 17 or 18 years of age it could be difficult for you. But Trent has won the league, has won the Champions League; Virgil and Mo the same. I don't think that is a problem for them to perform and that's what we see at the moment because they're playing really well."
If Virgil van Dijk pens a contract extension, it could put an end to the swirling rumors and potentially spark a domino effect. His commitment might just inspire key players like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mo Salah to follow suit, signing new deals and solidifying Liverpool's core for the future.
