Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies has attracted several admiring in recent seasons because of his incredible performances for the Bavarian giants. However, with his contract set to expire after the current season, clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona have stepped up their interest. But now, Manchester United has now thrown their hat into the ring, making the race for Davies even more intriguing.
Alphonso Davies’ current contract with Bayern Munich runs out in June 2025, which means that clubs can reach a pre-contract agreement with the Canadian in January. To say that some of the biggest clubs in Europe have registered interest in Davies would be an understatement. Despite suffering some injury setbacks in recent months, the Canadian skipper remains one of the best left-backs in the world. Therefore, the prospect of signing him on a free transfer is so enticing for several elite clubs. Real Madrid and Barcelona have already been linked to Davies. But now, Manchester United are also exploring avenues to bring the 23-year-old to Old Trafford, as per reports from SKY Germany’s Florian Plettenberg.
However, United aren’t overly confident of winning the race for Davies’ signature, as Los Blancos’ interest in the Canadian is well documented. According to several reports, Real Madrid is the preferred destination of Davies. The Spanish giants have been following his progress for several months now. And Madrid even reportedly agreed verbal contract with Davies in November 2023, which prompted Bayern’s hierarchy into urgent talks with the player’s representatives. The Bavarian giants tabled a contract extension worth approximately 13-million euros per year in March 2024. However, the offer fell short of Davies’ demands of 20-million euros per year.
Despite failing to agree on a contract extension, Davies continued to be a key player for Bayern, especially during their run to the Champions League semifinals, where they faced none other than Real Madrid. While Bayern took a narrow advantage thanks to Davies scoring at the Bernabéu, it wasn’t enough. A brace from Joselu crushed Bayern’s UCL hopes, ending their dream of lifting the trophy.
Although the Red Devils might not win the Alphonso Davies sweepstakes, they have a solid backup plan in the works. The Red Devils are eyeing a potential reunion with former academy product, Alvaro Carreras. The 21-year-old left-back is turning heads during his breakout season at Benfica, drawing interest from giants like Liverpool and Barcelona. However, United hold a trump card—a cut-price buy-back clause they smartly included when they sold Carreras to the Portuguese club last summer. This gives them a significant edge if they decide to bring the young talent back to Old Trafford.
