Mikel Arteta and Arsenal Handed Huge Boost as Captain Martin Odegaard Returns to Training

Norway and Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has returned to training ahead of Arsenal’s crunch Champions League game against Inter Milan. The 25-year-old midfielder had sustained an ankle injury in September while on international duty with Norway. However, it now looks like Odegaard’s long-awaited return is not far off.

Martin Odegaard has missed 12 games for Arsenal since he sustained an ankle injury during a Nations League match against Austria. The Gunners have missed his creativity and leadership in the subsequent games, as they currently languish in 5th spot in the Premier League standings after dropping points against Liverpool and Newcastle. However, in a major boost for the Gunners, Odegaard was recently spotted in training ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Inter Milan for their Champions League tie on Wednesday. Having said that, Arsenal still haven’t confirmed that whether the Norwegian will travel to Milan with the squad or not.

While the visuals of Odegaard returning to training might have lifted the mood around Arsenal, he still might be a long way away from match fitness. Despite being spotted on the training ground, Ødegaard didn’t make the cut for Ståle Solbakken’s latest 24-man Norway squad. Consequently, he’ll miss Norway’s upcoming Nations League matches against Slovenia on 14th November and Kazakhstan on 17th November. In Odegaard’s absence, Erling Haaland has been named as Norway’s skipper for the two Nations League ties. During a recent interview, Solbakken provided an update on Odegaard’s fitness. He said, “I speak to Martin every day, we do not rule it out completely, but he has to feel ready. They face Chelsea on Sunday, and we’ll take it day by day but for now it’s not possible for him to be involved.”

Meanwhile, Riccardo Calafiori (knee), Takehiro Tomiyasu (knee), and Kieran Tierney (hamstring) missed Tuesday’s training as they each work toward recovery. Arteta has hinted that the trio will likely be back in action after the November international break. The Arsenal squad is set to fly to Italy on Tuesday afternoon, with Arteta and Bukayo Saka scheduled to address the media around 11:30 pm IST.
