The Merseyside derby is one of the most significant matches in English football. However, the latest iteration of this storied rivalry has been postponed because of “Storm Darragh,” which has made landfall on the United Kingdom’s West Coast. The match was scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 7th, at 12:30 GMT (6:00 PM IST) at Goodison Park.
Following the decision to postpone the Merseyside derby, Everton released a club statement which read, “Following a Safety Advisory Group meeting at Goodison Park, attended by officials from both clubs, as well as representatives from Merseyside Police and Liverpool City Council this morning, it was decided that, due to the risk to safety in the local area due to strong wind gusts, and an amber severe wind warning that remains in place until 6am on Sunday, today’s fixture should be postponed on safety grounds. We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank supporters for their understanding. Whilst we appreciate this will be deeply disappointing for supporters, the safety of fans, staff and players is of paramount importance. Information relating to a rearranged date for the fixture will be announced in due course. All tickets purchased for the original fixture will remain valid for the rearranged fixture."
This announcement comes off the back of the Met Office issuing a 'danger to life' red weather warning due to the high wind speeds. Millions are being urged to remain indoors due to the rare red alert, and ultimately, ensuring people's safety takes precedence over football. Besides the obvious grave danger to life, Storm Darragh has also caused severe travel disruptions in and around Merseyside. As of now, Everton vs Liverpool is the only Premier League match postponed. However, it won’t come as a surprise if the Premier League officials decided to postpone the entire Gameweek 15 because of the bad weather. A new date for the Merseyside derby hasn’t been announced yet.
