Yuvraj Singh, veteran Indian batsman and Abhishek Sharma’s batter has something to say about him hitting his maiden century in the India Tour of Zimbabwe 2024.
Abhishek Sharma, the Indian opener has stated that his guru Yuvraj Singh was overjoyed when he was bowled for a duck in his International T20 debut against Zimbabwe, as the explosive former all-rounder thought it was a "good start".
Abhishek, registering his debut for the country, went out for a duck as the Indian side lost the opening T20I match against hosts Zimbabwe by 13 runs on Saturday. However, the young batter rallied to set the stage ablaze with a scorching first century (100 off 47 balls) in India's 100-run victory the next day.
Here’s what Abhishek Sharma said in a talk with BCCI-
"I spoke to him yesterday (Saturday) also, and I don't know why he was very happy when I got out on zero. He said that's a good start, but he must be very happy and proud just like my family,"
While thanking his mentor in both professional and personal walks of life, Abhishek continued-
"It's all because of him as well, the hard work he has put in (shaping) me. (For) two-three years, he has worked really hard not only on my cricket but off the field (life) as well."
After a great performance, Abhishek called his mentor, Yuvraj Singh and here’s what he said-
"Well done very proud, you deserve it. Many more (such innings) to come this is just the start,"
Due to Abhishek Sharma’s century and the calibre of the team, the five-match series tied 1-1. Men in Blue didn’t have enough time to ponder upon the first match, and what went wrong, as the difference between both the games was less.
"We lost yesterday but I felt, today is my day and I should take the match to the end, the positive was that we didn't have much time to think about the next game,"
"I was in a flow, and just wanted to express myself. I spoke to Rutu as well, he said the same thing that 'don't think much about the balls and hit what you think you can',"
The 23-year-old, full of joy, excitement and high hopes for an incredible future, thanked his captain and Punjab teammate, Shubman Gill for believing him with the bat.
"Special thanks to Shubman who timely gave me his bat, this was a much-needed innings for me and the team.
"This has been going on from U-14 times. Whenever I play with his bat I have done well, today also, the same happened.
"I played with his bat only, which I got after a lot of difficulty, he doesn't give it easily. That is like my last option when I feel I have to play with his bat for a comeback,”
The 23-year-old player has already made his mark in Indian Premier League 2024 with attacking batting and helping Sunrisers Hyderabad score the highest total in the league. With players like Abhishek Sharma in the team, the new Indian team is likely to come out with flying colours.
