6th Consecutive Win for South Africa in 2024 T20 World Cup

South Africa is doing wonders, performing and winning consistently in the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2024.

In the latest contest against England, South Africa registers their 6th consecutive win in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Placed in Group D, the Proteas have been indispensable in the tournament so far.

On 21st June, South Africa confronted England at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia and won the match by 7 runs.

First Innings

Winning the toss, England decided to field first.

South Africa had a good start. Quinton de Kock presented a quintessential performance by scoring 64 runs off 38 balls, hitting 4 fours and 4 sixes at the strike rate of 171.05.

Reeza walked shoulder to shoulder with Quinton till the 10th over. Moeen took Reeza and South Africa’s first at 86/1. South Africa had already made an impact.

Soon in the 12th over, Quinton got dismissed by Jofra. Then Klassen fell prey to being run out by Jos Buttler in the 13.4 over. Then came David Miller who took things in hand and added 43 runs to the scoreboard.

After David, the batsmen came and went back to the pavilion in no time. Markram, Tristan, Marco, and Maharaj scored 1, 12, 0, and 5 runs respectively.

Eventually, South Africa left 163 runs for England to chase.

Jofra Archer took 3 wickets, dismissing de Kock, David Miller, and Marco Jansen at the economy rate of 10.00. Moeen and Adil took one wicket each.

Second Innings

England’s opening batting performance was not satisfactory in setting the right path for the team to achieve the target score. The first wicket fell in 1.5 overs, Philip Salt scored 11 runs.

Soon Jonny had to go back to the pavilion at 16 runs and in no time, Jos Buttler’s wicket fell, and things started to get out of control for England.

Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone managed to stay on the pitch for long, protect wickets and score runs. Harry scored a much-needed half-century, and scored 53 runs off 37 balls, hitting 7 fours at the strike rate of 143.24 respectively. Liam scored 33 runs off 17 balls, hitting 3 fours, and 2 sixes at the strike rate of 194.12.

South Africa bowled efficiently. Every bowler took at least a wicket other than Marco and Aiden. Kagiso and Keshav Maharaj took 2 wickets each, whereas Baartman and Nortje took one wicket each.

In the end, England failed to achieve the target score and South Africa won the match by 7 runs, for the 6th time straight!

What’s Next?

England will confront the United States on 23rd June at the Kensington Oval for the 49th match. England is currently standing in the 3rd position, and it becomes extremely crucial for them to stay in the T20 World Cup 2024.

South Africa will be facing West Indies on 24th June at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. Currently, South Africa is leading the charts and sharing the top position with India. Winning the next match becomes crucial for the Proteas to maintain the winning streak and secure a leading position on the points table.
