Is Jay Shah Leaving BCCI for ICC?

Rumours are around. Is Jay Shah leaving BCCI and looking for new roles at the ICC?

Reports are suggesting that might bid adieu to his designation of honorary secretary at the BCCI to contest elections for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman post.

ICC elections are going to be held in November this year. If Shah wins, he will become the youngest ICC chairman.

Presently, no concrete statement has been presented declaring the Shah’s decision. These are just speculations that hint at Jay Shah’s next possible career move.

Though Jay himself has not commented on whether he wants to take part in the elections, he surely wants to bring changes in ICC’s processes and functions. This came after the emergence of controversy over the disorganization of the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2024.

Praise by Sunil Gavaskar

In recent times, batting icon Sunil Gavaskar complimented Shah for the initiatives done by the BCCI to promote cricket in India during his term.

“Many people criticize Jay Shah, focusing on his father’s political position rather than his contributions,” Gavaskar told India Today. “However, what Jay Shah has achieved—like bringing in the Women’s Premier League, ensuring equal pay for the Women’s team as the Men’s, increasing fees for IPL players, and significantly boosting incentives—is commendable. Unfortunately, some refuse to give him credit due to a political agenda.”

About Shah’s Career

Shah was appointed joint secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) in September 2013, after his tenure on the executive board of the Central Board of Cricket, Ahmedabad, which began in 2009.

During his term as joint secretary, he supervised the development of the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad alongside his father, Amit Shah, who was the GCA president at the time. Shah joined the BCCI's finance and marketing committees in 2015.

Four years later, he resigned as GCA joint secretary and was chosen BCCI Secretary for a one-and-a-half-year term, making him the youngest of the five office bearers. In December 2019, the BCCI appointed him as its delegate for future CEC meetings of the International Cricket Council. Later, in January 2021, the Asian Cricket Council selected Shah as President.
