Day 1: India’s long-awaited return to Test cricket is finally underway. Team India go head-to-head against a Bangladesh side, who are riding high after a series win against Pakistan in Pakistan. Meanwhile, India head into the match with a full-strength squad, consisting of the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravi Ashwin, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. Having said that, Bangladesh soon held an advantageous position, as they won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Early on, Najmal Hossain Shanto’s decision to bowl first was vindicated, as Hasan Mahmud fiery opening spell skittled India’s top order. Mahmud first scalp was the wicket of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma in the sixth over. After dismissing the ‘Hitman,’ Mahmud took two crucial wickets of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli in quick succession. At this point, India were reeling, already down three wickets with just 34 runs on the scoreboard. Amid the carnage, young Yashasvi Jaiswal stood firm, holding the innings together as wickets tumbled around him. Jaiswal, along with Rishabh Pant, steadied the ship with a vital 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket, calming some nerves after the early collapse.
However, as the second session began, Pant was dismissed on 39 runs by Mahmud. This was the 24-year-old pacer’s fourth wicket of the day. It is safe to suggest that the Indian top order had no answer for Mahmud’s exceptional bowling. With wickets falling around him, Yashasvi Jaiswal remained calm and soon he brought up his fifth test half-century in 95 balls. However, Jaiswal couldn’t convert his half-century into a century, as Nahid Rana made the all-important breakthrough for Bangladesh. In the very next over, Mehidy Hasan Miraz dismissed KL Rahul. With just 144 runs on the board, India were already down six wickets.
For all intent and purpose, i it seemed Bangladesh were set to wrap up the Indian innings for under 250 runs. However, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja had other ideas. Despite all the odds stacked against them, the duo resurrected India’s floundering innings. Ashwin scored India’s first century of the test season, while Jadeja is currently on 86 runs. At stumps, the two batsmen have put up a 195-run sixth wicket partnership, which has taken India’s total to a respectable 339 for six wickets.
Day 2: After the heroics of Day 1, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja came out on Day 2 looking to put India on a more dominant position. However, Taskin Ahmed had other ideas. Aided by the conditions, the Bangladeshi pacer finally got the all-important breakthrough, dismissing Jadeja (who was on 86 runs) with 343 runs on the scoreboard. With Jadeja gone, India’s fragile lower order was quickly exposed, and it wasn’t long before Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud wrapped up the innings. Taskin dismissed Akashdeep and Ashwin, while Mahmud took the wicket of Jasprit Bumrah. Ashwin ended the innings with 113 runs. While this was not what Indian fans were hoping for, the heroics of Ashwin and Jadeja put India in a commanding position.
Bangladesh began their innings with openers Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan, but Jasprit Bumrah gave India a near-perfect start, dismissing Islam with the final ball of his first over. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto then joined Zakir Hasan at the crease, and the pair did well to weather the early storm from Bumrah and Siraj, putting up 22 runs by the eighth over. But that brief resistance was quickly shattered when debutant Akash Deep struck twice in quick succession—removing Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque to put India firmly in control.
Soon afterwards, skipper Najmul Shanto was also dismissed by Siraj. And just an over later, Bumrah got rid of Mushfiqur Rahim. With just 40 runs on the scoreboard for the loss of five wickets, the Bangla Tigers’ competent batting order was rocking. And their problems only worsened once Rohit Sharma introduced Jadeja and Ashwin into the bowling attack.
Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das provided a brief glimmer of hope with a gutsy 51-run stand, but Jadeja’s magic ended that resistance, first dismissing Das and then following up by sending Shakib packing in his very next over. With the Bangladeshi tail exposed, Indian pacers soon brought an end to the innings. Bumrah castled Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud, while Siraj took care of Nahid Rana, wrapping up Bangladesh's innings for a mere 149 runs. Mehidy Hasan Miraz remained unbeaten on 27, but Bangladesh now found themselves trailing by a daunting 227 runs.
With a healthy lead over Bangladesh, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal strode out with confidence to open India’s 2nd innings. But it didn’t take long for Bangladesh to strike. Taskin Ahmed drew first blood, sending the Indian skipper back to the pavilion with just 15 runs on the board. Not long after, Nahid Rana joined the action, dismissing Jaiswal. In no time, India’s openers were back in the dressing room, with only 28 runs on the scoreboard. But then, the moment everyone had been waiting for: Virat Kohli emerged to a thunderous roar from the Chepauk crowd. Teaming up with Shubman Gill, Kohli brought a sense of calm to the crease, building a steady 39-run partnership. Yet, just as things started to look stable, Mehidy Hasan worked his magic, removing Kohli in the 20th over.
After Kohli’s dismissal, Rohit Sharma didn’t decide to send a ‘Night Watchman,’ instead it was Rishabh Pant who came next to bat. And in typical Pant style, he scored a six and a four in his first seven balls. As the day came to a close, India reached 81 for three, with Gill holding firm on 33 not out and Pant lighting up the evening with a rapid 12 off 13. This match is far from over, but India still has the upper hand.
Day 3: If Day 1 showcased India's grit and Day 2 saw them solidify their grip on the match, then Day 3 was all about total domination. Resuming at 81 for 3, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant returned to the crease with one clear mission: push Bangladesh out of contention. And they did just that in style. From the get-go, the two batsmen completely dominated the Bangladeshi bowling attack with measured strokeplay and fearless hitting. While Gill continued to find gaps on a regular basis with his Immaculate timing, Pant proceeded to chalk up runs through sheer power hitting.
By lunchtime, India had surged to a commanding 205 for 3. Gill and Pant were not just batting; they were putting on a show. After the lunch break, Pant and Gill continued their assault. And it was the 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman who brought up his century first. It took Pant just 124 balls. What’s even more impressive is that he has now equaled MS Dhoni’s record of most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper, with six. Soon, Shubman Gill also brought up his century, albeit at a much slower pace than Pant.
However, it was Bangladesh’s premier spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz who brought an end to Pant’s scintillating knock in the 56th over. But by then, Pant and Gill had already stitched together a 167-run stand for the fourth wicket. Following Pant’s dismissal, KL Rahul joined Gill on the crease, and the pair continued to pile on the runs. With the lead ballooning, Rohit Sharma called his team back, declaring India's innings at 287 for 4, leaving Bangladesh an almost unsurmountable target of 515. Gill remained unbeaten on 119, while Rahul chipped in with a breezy 22.
Bangladeshi openers Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan strode onto the pitch knowing the sheer difficulty of the task ahead. Despite a 515-run target, the Bangladeshi openers went about their business with calm and poise. This time, Islam and Hasan were able to provide a strong foundation to Bangladesh’s innings, with 62-run partnership. However, it was Jasprit Bumrah who gave India the crucial breakthrough, when he dismissed Hasan for 33 runs in the 17th over. With the pitch deteriorating in condition, Rohit Sharma brought on Ashwin into the bowling attack. And soon the Indian skipper’s gamble paid off.
Ashwin dismissed Shadman Islam in the 22nd over. Following that wicket, Bangladeshi skipper Najmul Shanto and Mominul Haque somewhat steadied Bangladesh’s innings, with a 38-run second wicket partnership. But Ashwin wasn't done yet—he came back to dismiss Haque with the final ball of the 30th over, and soon after, he sent Mushfiqur Rahim packing as well. With just 146 runs on the board, Bangladesh found themselves in deep trouble at four wickets down. Amid the turmoil, Najmul Shanto found his rhythm, bringing up a fighting half-century in just 55 balls. With Najmul and Shakib Al Hasan still at the crease at the end of Day 3, it gives Bangladeshi supporters some hope that their beloved team can pull off something which is nearly impossible. At the end of Day 3, Bangladesh need 357 runs to secure their first ever test win over India.
