This is Gautam Gambhir's debut series as Indian cricket team head coach, and the squads chosen for the three T20Is and three ODIs are intriguing. The most significant change is that Suryakumar Yadav, not Hardik Pandya, would captain the team in the three T20Is against Sri Lanka.
So, why was Hardik Pandya, a player who played a key role in India's T20 World Cup victory, overlooked for captaincy?
Gautam Gambhir is concerned about his fitness. The talented all-rounder took an extended sabbatical following a freak ankle injury at the ODI World Cup 2023. He made a return in the IPL. That wasn't all; Pandya has already missed other events owing to injury.
With major changes in the India squad for T20Is, Men in Blue are expected to perform top-notch. The onus lies on Suryakumar Yadav, the new T20I captain and Gautam Gambhir, the new head coach.
Though, Suryakumar and Gautam’s chemistry goes back to the days of Kolkata Knight Riders. We might witness the same balance in the upcoming T20I matches, especially in the India Tour of Sri Lanka 2024.
