Can David Warner Play One More ICC Tournament?

Is David Warner going to play in next year’s ICC Champions Trophy? The speculation came in after David Warner had left a scope of playing a final tournament after announcing the T20I retirement.

Australian batsman David Warner has shed some light on his return to the Australian cricket team for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 despite declaring retirement from T20 Internationals.

Warner announced his retirement from Tests in January 2024 right after the end of the Australian summer and from T20I cricket after ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2024 as well, but left a door open for playing the final ODI in the Pakistan in next year’s tournament via a post on Instagram.

Warner has clearly stated his desire to play T20 cricket at the domestic level-

"It’s been an unbelievable experience to play at the highest level for such a long period. Australia was my team,"

"The majority of my career was at the international level. It’s been an honour to be able to do this.

"I want to say thanks to everyone out there who has made this possible. My wife and my girls, who sacrificed so much, thank you for all your support. No person will ever know what we’ve been through.

"I will continue to play franchise cricket for a while, and I am also open to playing for (Australia) in the Champions Trophy if selected.

"This team has had unbelievable success the last few years and long may this continue. Pat Cummins, Andrew Old Mac (McDonald, Australian coach) and staff have got this.

Australia in the T20 World Cup & David’s Retirement

Australia’s elimination from the T20 World Cup confirmed David’s retirement from the international cricket contest. Warner had already hinted towards his retirement that the T20 World Cup at USA and West Indies would be his final in the Australian jersey.

David Warner had a brilliant T20 career. In 2021, Warner became the fourth batsman to achieve 10,000 runs in T20 cricket.

In the ICC’s Digital Daily Show, Ricky Ponting said,

"I said, '...just take a moment tonight to sit back by yourself and reflect on what's been an unbelievable career across all three formats for Australia.’

"We know he retired in the summer from test cricket, but you'll struggle to find a guy that's had as big an impact on all three forms in Australian cricket than David Warner has.

"I've been able to play with him, I've been able to coach him in the IPL the last couple of years and I really enjoy his company. So, he should be very proud of what he's done."

Though cricket fans around the world would love to watch David Warner playing at his finest in his last tournament, let’s see what has in store for Warner and Australian cricket.
