Afghanistan is Out of the T20 World Cup 2024

Afghanistan could not defeat South Africa to enter the final of the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2024. AFG scored the lowest score in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Afghanistan scored lowest in the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2024. The team got whitewashed by the Proteas in 11.5 overs at 56 runs. A team cannot expect to win the semi-final against an indispensable team like South Africa with such a low score. South Africa left no chance in winning the South Africa vs Afghanistan and entering the finals.

Afghanistan won the toss and decided to bat first.

Poor opening, poor middle-order, and poor lower-order batting. The kind of performance Afghanistan showcased was not ideal for a semi-final contest. Wickets started to fall one after the other. None of the batsmen could be able to score more than 10 runs.

South African bowlers thrashed the Afghan batters. Afghanistan’s joy of entering the semi-finals for the first time went down the drain. With poor batting and dominating bowling, Afghanistan could leave a target score of 57 runs only.

Every bowler took wickets, except Keshav Maharaj. Marco, Rabada, Nortje, and Shamsi took 3, 2, 2, and 3 wickets respectively.

Now it was time for the Proteas to steal the show. Though Afghanistan tried to stop every run, the target score was more than easy to achieve. Only a wonder could have made Afghanistan win the match.

South Africa finished the match in 8.5 overs at a loss of one wicket.

With this defeat, Afghanistan gets knocked out of the 2024 T20 World Cup and South Africa enters the finals for the first time ever and will confront India or England in the final of the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2024.

This is what Afghanistan captain, Rashid Khan said in the post-match ceremony-

“I think it was a tough night for us as a team, and we could've done better than us. But conditions didn't let us do that but you should be mentally ready for any situation. I thought we didn't bat well,”

“We were struggling when Mujeeb got injured, but Nabi, Fazal... that made our job as a spinning unit easier. The consistency in bowling was something pleasing for me. We came here before the tournament and if you told us we would be playing the semi-final against South Africa, we would accept that,” Rashid said.

“Winning big games in this competition...and yes, we are capable of beating any side. Next time when we participate in a tournament like this, we will have the belief. It's about how you manage yourself in those pressure situations against tough teams.

“There is a lot of hard work to be done, especially in the middle order. We need to be aggressive and have someone to take the innings deep. We have achieved some good results but when we come back in the tournament, we need to do better, especially in the batting department,” Rashid added.
