AFG and WI join teams like India, South Africa, and Australia in the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup 2024. West Indies and Afghanistan both teams are qualified from Group C.
West Indies thrashed New Zealand’s every chance to secure a position in the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup 2024.
WI defeated the Blackcaps by 13 runs in the recent contest, wherein New Zealand won the toss and decided to field first.
Despite a poor opening, West Indies managed to leave a target score of 149 runs. The larger credit goes to Sherfane Rutherford who scored 68* runs off 39 balls at the strike rate of 174.36.
New Zealand’s efficient bowling restricted West Indies’ every single move to score runs. The Kiwi bowler that stood out from the rest was Trent Boult who took 3 with an economy rate of 4.00 in 4 overs.
Southee, Lockie, Neesham, and Santner took 2, 2, 1, and 1 wicket respectively.
West Indies’ bowling was many steps ahead. Alzarri Joseph was the star bowler who took 4 wickets and dismissed Finn Allen, James Neesham, Tim Southee, and Glenn Phillips who could’ve been a problem for WI.
Akeal, Andre, and Gudekesh took 1, 1, and 3 wickets respectively. NZ batsmen couldn’t stand the wrath of Caribbean bowlers and West Indies eventually won the match by 13 runs and entered the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup 2024.
In the recent match against Papua New Guinea, Afghanistan managed to win and enter the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Winning the toss, Afghanistan decided to bowl first.
Papua New Guinea could set a difficult score for Afghanistan to chase. The team could only score 95 runs in 19.5 overs. None of PNG’s batters could display a satisfactory performance.
The Player of the Match, Fazalhaq Farooqi took 3 wickets and dismissed Lega Saika, Sese Bau, and Alei Neo. Fazalhaq Farooqi gave only 16 runs to the opposing team and bowled 4 overs with a 4.00 economy rate.
Along with Fazalhaq Farooqi, Naveen-ul-Haq and Noor Ahmed helped to enhance the Afghan bowling lineup. Both bowlers took 2 and 1 wicket respectively.
Chasing a target score of 96 runs is quite easy for a team like Afghanistan.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran opened. Soon, both the openers were out in the first three overs of the innings.
Gulbadin Naib managed to add runs for the team and took the score to the target. Gulbadin scored 49* off 36 balls and hit 4 fours, and 2 sixes with a strike rate of 136.11.
Mohammad Nabi assisted Gulbadin, and the duo easily exceeded the target score and won the match in 15.1 overs.
With this win, Afghanistan officially entered the Super 8 of the T20 World Cup 2024 joins West Indies.
Both teams will be confronting each other at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium on 18th June.
