Action at the 2024 Paris Olympics continues, as the group stages of the men’s basketball tournament draws to a close. With multiple knockout spots up for grabs, it would surely be an entertaining day for basketball fans.
While Day 7 of the 2024 Paris Olympics brings several highly anticipated events, France taking on Germany at the men’s basketball tournament will surely hog most of the eyeballs. Both France and Germany have been two of the best teams at this year’s Olympics. Therefore, this clash between these two European rivals is must-see television.
Over the years, France as a nation has produced some of the most talented and technically gifted basketball players. NBA stars like Tony Parker, Rudy Gobert, Boris Diaw and Nicolas Batum all call France their home. Despite the abundance of talent, the French men’s national basketball team has never clinched a gold medal at the Olympics. Having said that, they have won the silver medal on three separate occasions, with the latest coming at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the French men’s basketball team had a stellar campaign. They won five games on the bounce to reach the finals, where they faced a stacked Team USA. This US team consisted of the likes of Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum and Draymond Green. Despite this, France ran them close, losing by a scoreline of 87-82.
USA have been a constant thorn of France’s gold medal aspirations, as they have defeated France three times in a gold medal match at the Olympics. However, the 2024 Paris Olympics could be very different. Les Bleus will be buoyed by home support. However, that isn’t the most important factor. The emergence of 20-year-old Victor Wembanyama into a global basketball superstar is.
The 20-year-old Frenchman is a true unicorn, possessing qualities never seen before in a player. Wemby’s size and skillset make him a handful to deal with. As a result, Victor balled out in his first NBA season. Apart from winning Rookie of the Year award, Wembanyama also came second in Defensive Player of the Year voting, behind fellow Frenchman Rudy Gobert. Wembanyama’s brillance, combined with the talent and leadership of veterans like Gobert, Batum and Fournier, make France a legitimate gold medal contender this year.
France isn’t the only European nation vying for a medal at the 2024 Olympics; their long-time rivals Germany are also strong contenders. After all, they are the reigning FIBA World Cup champions. Germany defeated USA in the semifinals of the 2023 FIBA World Cup enroute to winning the title. Therefore, the Germans should not be underestimated at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
However, basketball fans around the globe don’t consider Germany a legitimate medal contender. Their brand of fast-paced, team-oriented basketball has given teams like USA a lot of trouble in the past. Furthermore, they possess an excellent blend of young talented players and seasoned veterans. The German roster consists of multiple NBA stars like Franz and Moritz Wagner, Dennis Schroder and Daniel Theis.
Right now, it’s Germany, not France, who’s leading their group. The Germans have been ruthless at the 2024 Olympics. They kicked off their campaign by thrashing Japan 97-77 in their opening game. Die Mannschaft then overcame Brazil in matchday two by a scoreline of 86-73. Hence, Germany’s match up against France is so eagerly awaited. So, which team would come out on top?
The game is scheduled to take place on 2nd August 2024 (Friday). The match will tip off at 12:30 AM (Indian Standard Time).
