The Chicago Bulls have decided to retire Derrick Rose’s No.1 jersey next season. Rose, who’s a Chicago native, enjoyed eight injury-interrupted, but memorable seasons with the Bulls franchise. He also became the youngest MVP in NBA history after putting up historic figures during the 2010-11 season. Following his retirement announcement last year, the Bulls organization has decided to honor his legacy.
The Chicago Bulls struck gold when they selected Derrick Rose with the first pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. It didn’t take long for the Chicago native to win over the hearts of Bulls fans. With jaw-dropping athleticism and electrifying dunks, Rose turned the Bulls into must-watch TV. In his rookie season, D-Rose made an immediate impact, leading the Bulls to a 7th seed in the Eastern Conference—quite the leap for a team that had finished 11th just a year earlier. Over 81 regular-season games, he put up impressive numbers, averaging 16.8 points, 6.3 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game. His incredible debut campaign earned him the coveted Rookie of the Year award.
Rose’s second season showed steady improvement, but it was during his third year that he truly became a global sensation. Derrick Rose etched his name into NBA history when he became the youngest MVP ever, putting up jaw-dropping numbers: 25 points, 7.7 assists, and 4.1 rebounds over 81 games. His brilliance was the driving force behind the Chicago Bulls’ 62-win season, earning them the top seed in the Eastern Conference. For Bulls fans, those first three seasons were magical—pure D-Rose at his peak. But heartbreak followed. A devastating ACL injury stripped Rose of the explosive speed and athleticism that defined his game. Though he fought his way back to the court, he was never quite the same player. The unthinkable happened in 2017 when the Bulls traded their hometown hero to the New York Knicks, leaving many fans stunned and heartbroken.
Rose’s career officially came to an end last year after being released by the Memphis Grizzlies. Yet, for fans in Chicago and basketball lovers everywhere, the legacy of prime D-Rose remains untouchable—a story of brilliance, resilience, and what could have been. Rose finished his career with 12,573 points and 3,770 assists in 723 games across 15 seasons. In addition to his time with the Bulls, Knicks and Grizzlies, he also played for the Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Next season, Derrick Rose will join an elite group of Chicago Bulls legends when his jersey is raised to the rafters, becoming just the fifth player in franchise history to receive the honor. He’ll stand alongside greats like Jerry Sloan (No. 4), Bob Love (No. 10), Michael Jordan (No. 23), and Scottie Pippen (No. 33). The Bulls have also paid tribute to icons like Phil Jackson and Jerry Krause with banners commemorating their contributions to the team’s legacy. The Bulls celebrated "Derrick Rose Night" during Saturday’s game against the Knicks. Both teams donned shooting shirts honoring Rose during warmups, and the organization unveiled the Derrick Rose Atrium Experience—a showcase of unique memorabilia from his incredible career.
