Sanath Jayasuriya – New Interim Head Coach of the Sri Lanka Cricket Team
Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed as the new interim head coach of Sri Lanka's cricket team.
Former Sri Lankan and veteran batsman, Sanath Jayasuriya who is also known for scoring most centuries in ODI becomes the interim head coach of the Sri Lanka’s Men’s cricket team.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced on Twitter -
Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of Mr. Sanath Jayasuriya as the 'Interim Head Coach' of the National Team. He will function in the position until the completion of Sri Lanka's tour of England in September 2024.
Sanath Jayasuriya, a veteran Sri Lankan batsman and captain is presently working as the cricket consultant for SLC. Jayasuriya is likely to resume his new job soon with new roles to fulfil. Jayasuriya has been appointed as the head coach till the end of Sri Lanka’s Tour of England occurring in September.
Why a Change in Leadership?
Sri Lanka’s poor performance at the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2024 is the prime reason why Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is implementing the change.
The team could not perform well under the guidance of Chris Silverwood as the head coach and Mahela Jayawardene as the consultant. Though there are no changes in Mahela’s roles and responsibilities, but Chris surely has been replaced by Sanath Jayasuriya.
After being elected as the head coach, Jayasuriya's first onus would be to conquer the white-ball home series of 3 ODIs, and 3 T20Is against India, commencing on 27th July.
Sri Lanka Cricket's CEO, Ashley de Silva, expressed optimism about Jayasuriya's appointment and backed him to stabilize Sri Lankan cricket in the coming days.

"Sanath with his wealth of international cricketing experience is well positioned to guide the national team until we find a permanent solution,"
Sanath Jayasuriya History & Career
Sanath Jayasuriya has a long career starting from 1989 to 2011, across all three formats of cricket – tests, ODIs, and T20Is. The veteran player has been part of 586 matches, 651 innings, 21031 runs, 42 centuries, 103 half-centuries, 2486 fours, and 352 sixes at an average and strike rate of 34.14 and 81.17 respectively.
