Chandigarh Gets Its New Stadium for 2nd Match of IPL 2024

Before the 2nd match of the IPL 2024, Mohali’s Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium had all the limelight. After the contest, Chandigarh’s new stadium will steal it.

With the rise of love for the Indian Premier League, the cricket infrastructure is skyrocketing. One evidence comes from the northern city, the Capital of Punjab & Haryana - Chandigarh. The city has been blessed with their cricket stadium - Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh.

About the Stadium

Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium has been in the news since 2010 when the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) announced the building of a cricket venue at Mullanpur, Chandigarh spanned over 41.95 acres.

The stadium can accommodate over 35,000 cricket fans to witness the live cricket action.

Dedicated Stands

PCA had decided to dedicate two stands to renowned former international cricketers, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh in 2022. The authority has yet to decide if they are dedicating a pavilion stand named after Yuvraj Singh, but the news is confirmed for a stand named after Harbhajan Singh.

IPL 2024 is the First Contest at the Stadium

The first-ever match at this cricket venue will be between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals on March 23rd, Saturday. As an added bonus, the PCA will be embarking on a new path by hosting future international matches at this venue.

The stadium, which has been through some controversy over the past decade, is finally ready to hold the match.

What’s in Store for Punjab Kings?

Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium is another home ground for Punjab Kings along with Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium. Having another stadium will boost the morale of players and offer growth to young talent.

Punjab Kings, earlier known as Kings XI Punjab had played their home matches at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali, and at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala. In 2016, the club had announced to host three home matches at Nagpur but soon shifted to Dharamshala.

In the last season of the Indians Premier League, Punjab Kings finished 8th with six wins. Now this stadium is considered a lucky charm under Shikhar Dhawan’s captaincy. The squad should prioritize picking up Rishi Dhawan and Sikandar Raza because of their experience playing domestic matches in this region.

Hoping for a Grand Opening

Dilsher Khanna, secretary, PCA said-

“We will surely make it a memorable event. The preparations are already underway.”

To create more awareness, the authorities had decided to allot free-entry to the underprivileged and specially-abled children.
