Following a string of withdrawals from England’s training camp, interim manager Lee Carsley has decided to call up Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento. The pair have already linked up with the squad at St George’s Park.
Their call-ups bring Carsley’s roster to 24 players, following the departures of Ezri Konsa, Kobbie Mainoo, and Morgan Gibbs-White due to injury. Both Jones and Livramento reported to camp on Tuesday evening. Livramento, initially called up for the U-21s, has been promoted to the senior side, while Jones—fresh off his triumph as part of England’s 2023 Under-21 Euro-winning squad—reunites with Carsley, who previously managed the duo at youth level. It’s a chance for both players to make their mark on the big stage.
Both Tino Livramento and Curtis Jones have received national call ups before. In fact, Jones was in Gareth Southgate’s 33-man preliminary squad for Euro 2024, but he was amongst the five players who were later snubbed. Meanwhile, Livramento earned his first call up from Carsley last month. However, neither has made their senior debut as of now. Nevertheless, that could soon change, as England are dealing with a few concerning knocks to key players.
Ahead of the Three Lions’ Thursday night clash against Greece at Wembley, skipper Harry Kane has continued working on an individualized training program, after FA’s doctors declared him fit to play for England. Kane’s injury is particularly concerning given his poor track record with ankle injuries in the past. Having said that, England have adequate cover in that position, with Ollie Watkins and Dominic Solanke waiting in the wings. On top of Kane’s injury, Manchester City winger Jack Grealish also sat out of training after suffering a minor knock. Following Thursday night’s clash against Greece, England travel to Helsinki to face Finland on Sunday. The Three Lions have started the Nations League with wins over Republic of Ireland and Finland.
