Since his arrival in North London in 2021, Cristian Romero has not only established himself as a mainstay in Tottenham’s Starting XI – he has emerged as one of the Premier League's standout defenders. Few can match the Argentine's combination of composure and tenacity. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that he’s one of the most sought-after defenders in the world.
Having said that, Tottenham have done extremely well to ward of any admiring glances. But now, reports have surfaced that Real Madrid are beginning to show growing interest in acquiring Romero’s services. According to reports from Argentina, Romero has a release clause inserted within his contract, which Los Blancos are looking to trigger. However, the Lilywhites have come out and vehemently denied this claim. Real Madrid, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain were all linked to Romero in the summer, but Spurs rejected all approaches as they view the Argentine as “untouchable.”
Earlier this week, reports from his native Argentina have claimed there is a €65m (£54.3m) release clause in the player’s contract that can be activated, though Fabrizio Romano has revealed those reports are false. As per Romano, “There’s NO €65m release clause into Cuti Romero’s contract at Spurs despite reports from Argentina. Tottenham considered him untouchable last summer despite interest from top clubs.” The Argentine’s contract with Spurs is set to expire in 2027, but the Lilywhite’s management would surely try to tie him down to a long-term contract, as he’s one of Ange Postecoglou’s most trusted lieutenants. The Australian head coach made him the vice-captain of the club following his appointment last season.
Under Postecoglou’s leadership, Romero has established a solid defensive partnership with Micky Van de Ven. Therefore, Spurs have no intention of selling the 26-year-old Argentine. While trophies have eluded Romero at the club level, it’s an entirely different story on the international stage. Cristian ‘Cuti’ Romero has been an important part of Argentina’s recent success under Lionel Scaloni. He was named in the Team of Tournament as La Albiceleste clinched back-to-back Copa America titles in 2021 and 2023. On top of that, Romero played nearly every minute of Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph in Qatar. To put his importance into perspective, Romero has lost just two games in his 38 caps for La Albiceleste. Any club would be lucky to have Romero on their books. But for now, he’s Tottenham’s vice-captain, and if any team is bold enough to make an offer, Daniel Levy is sure to demand a hefty price for the Argentine star.
