Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold isn’t short of admirers. The 26-year-old has become one of the best fullbacks in world football. And with his contract expiring next year, several big clubs have started to circle around the scouser. Spanish giants Real Madrid are no different.
However, in the last few days, Los Blancos’ hierarchy have started to monitor Trent’s contract situation with more interest. Following Dani Carvajal’s unfortunate ACL injury – which has ruled him out for the season – the Spanish giants are short of options at the right-back position. 33-year-old Lucas Vazquez is the only natural option in the position. But despite Carvajal’s injury setback, Real Madrid do not plan to sign any player in the coming months or the January transfer window. Having said that, Los Blancos are keeping a close eye on Liverpool’s Trent Alexander Arnold.
Dani Carvajal’s ACL injury has given rise to a very serious question – who will be his long-term heir? Lucas Vazquez is already in the twilight years of his career. So, surely he won’t be Carvajal’s long-term successor. Unsurprisingly, Madrid’s management have already shortlisted a target, and it’s none other than Trent Alexander-Arnold. The 26-year-old Scouser is clearly their No.1 target. However, the plan is to bring him in next summer as a free agent, with his current Liverpool contract set to expire at the end of this season. According to MARCA, Los Blancos will make a move for Trent in January, but only if he hasn’t signed a contract extension with Liverpool by then.
However, if the Reds don’t have an agreement with Alexander-Arnold, then Madrid will swoop in and put forth a contract proposal. The idea is that Los Blancos want Trent in their side for the 2025/26 season, but if the price is right, then Real’s hierarchy won’t hesitate in signing the 26-year-old fullback in January. However, signing Trent in January is wishful thinking, as the Reds have made an incredible start to the 2024/25 season, leading the Premier League after seven games. On top of that, TAA has hinted that he’s open to signing a new contract with his boyhood club.
In a recent interview, the 26-year-old said, “I have always said I want to captain the club. That is a goal of mine, whether that happens is out of my hands. I want to be a Liverpool player this season (as a minimum) is what I will say.” But in the very same interview, the Scouser went on to state that trophies are the most important thing for him. He said, “The most important thing is always trophies. I want to win trophies. I’m a player who is highly motivated by winning things and being elite. That’s probably the main factor of anything. If you have a personality that’s elite, who wants to win and will do anything to win then that’s what drives them.” Trent has sent mixed signals so far, and that doesn’t help the growing speculation surrounding his future. The 26-year-old is one of the most technically gifted players of his generation and any club would be lucky to have him. But now, he faces a defining decision—does he want to cement his legacy as a Liverpool legend, or chase the allure of the bright lights in Madrid? The choice could shape the rest of his career.
