Atletico Madrid and Chelsea agreed on a fee worth 40-million euros (plus add-ons) for the signature of the 20-year-old striker. However, Omorodion’s proposed move to the English giants has fallen through.
Samu Omorodion had been on Chelsea's radar for quite some time, with the club making a bid of around 33 million euros in June, which was turned down by Atletico. The 20-year-old Spanish striker, who spent the season on loan at Alaves in La Liga, made a strong impression by scoring 9 goals and providing one assist. His impressive performances during the 2023/24 season earned him a call-up to the Spanish squad for the 2024 Olympics, where La Roja went on to win the gold medal.
While the exact reason for the collapse is still unknown, some outlets have speculated that Omorodion failed Chelsea’s medical because of an injury he sustained during La Roja’s Olympics campaign. However, according to El Chiringuito TV, the deal fell through once Chelsea attempted to buy 50% of Omorodion’s image rights. The Spanish gold medalist felt “disrespected” by Chelsea’s proposal. Samu Omorodion had already agreed terms on a 7-year deal with Chelsea. But now, Omorodion’s collapsed move to Chelsea has jeopardized Conor Gallagher and Julian Alvarez's move to Atletico Madrid.
Samu Omorodion’s transfer to Chelsea was closely interlinked with Conor Gallagher’s move to Atletico Madrid. It was virtually a swap deal, as Chelsea forked out 40-million euros for Omorodion and Atletico paid 42-million euros for Gallagher. Omorodion’s collapsed move could also jeopardize Julian Alvarez’s move to Atletico. However, both the clubs don’t want the deals to collapse, and are finding solutions for the problem.
Atletico Madrid have offered Chelsea the services of Joao Felix. The 24-year-old attacker spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Chelsea. And by the looks of it, both Chelsea and Felix are keen on the transfer. Joao Felix scored four goals for Chelsea in 20 appearances during the latter stages of the 2022/23 season. In recent months, Felix has also attracted interest from Aston Villa. According to several news outlets, the Atletico attacker is Unai Emery’s dream target for this transfer window.
If Atletico and Chelsea reach an agreement on Joao Felix’s transfer fee, he would become the Blues' 11th signing of the summer. They have already added the likes of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Filip Jorgensen, Omari Kellyman, Aaron Anselmino, Renato Veiga, Caleb Wiley, Marc Guiu, Pedro Neto and Tosin Adarabioyo during this transfer window. Furthermore, Chelsea have already agreed terms with talented teenager William Estevao and Kendry Paez. Both the teenagers will join Chelsea next summer.
