Transfer News: Napoli and Chelsea Finally Reach an Agreement for the Signing of Romelu Lukaku

Napoli are closing in on signing their priority transfer of the summer window. The Naples-based club would have to fork out upward of 30-million euros for the services of Romelu Lukaku.

It is the beginning of a new era for Napoli. After ending a 30-year wait by winning the Scudetto in the 2022/23 season, the club experienced a nightmare title defense, finishing a dismal 10th in Serie A with only 53 points—the worst title defense in the league’s history. In order to get Napoli back on track, the club’s hierarchy have appointed serial winner Antonio Conte. However, Conte is a very demanding manager, and Romelu Lukaku was at the top of his wish list. Thankfully, it seems Conte is set to get his wish, as Gli Azzurri have reached an agreement in principle with Chelsea for Lukaku's signing.

According to some reports, Napoli will have to pay 30-million euros plus add-ons that could amount up to 15-million euros. Romelu Lukaku has already agreed personal terms with Napoli on a three-year contract. According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, “Chelsea, Napoli and player’s camp are now proceeding with formal steps to get all documents signed for Romelu Lukaku deal. Verbal agreement 100% confirmed as reported on Friday. Lukaku also spoke to Antonio Conte after the breakthrough. Permanent move, 3-year contract.”

Romelu Lukaku rejoined Chelsea from Inter Milan during the summer of 2021 for a whopping 97.5-million pounds. The towering Belgian striker joined a Champions League-winning squad, and many believed his arrival was the missing piece Chelsea needed to secure a Premier League title under Thomas Tuchel. However, Lukaku’s second stint in London failed to live up to expectations, as he hasn’t played for the Blues since May 2022. He was loaned out to Inter Milan for the 2022/23 season, and then to Roma during the 2023/24 season.

A move to Napoli would be a fresh start for Belgium’s all-time top scorer. And if there’s a coach who can resurrect Lukaku’s career, it is Antonio Conte. The Belgium played the best football of his career under the guidance of Conte at Inter, racking up 47 goals and 17 assists in two Serie A seasons. Napoli fans will hope that Lukaku rediscovers his form this season under Conte’s coaching.
