Barcelona icon Andreas Iniesta has decided to hang up his boots. According to multiple reports, the 40-year-old midfielder will call time on his illustrious career next week, as hinted by his recent social media post.
Andrés Iniesta has been a free agent since departing UAE's Emirates Club this summer after his contract ran out. Retirement rumors gained traction when the legendary midfielder shared an Instagram video, showing him painting a mural of himself. The post was captioned, “COMING SOON. 8, 10, 24,” which many believe hints at an impending retirement announcement on 8th October—a date likely chosen because the No. 8 has become iconic with his illustrious career.
Iniesta made his debut for Barcelona in 2002 after he graduated the Blaugrana’s famed La Masia academy. Andrés Iniesta’s career at Barcelona was nothing short of legendary. Over 16 unforgettable years, he made 674 appearances, scored 57 goals, and provided 135 assists, earning himself a place among the club’s greatest. His trophy cabinet is packed with 32 major honors, making him the second-most decorated player in Barça history, just behind Lionel Messi. Iniesta’s glittering haul includes four Champions League titles, nine La Liga crowns, six Copa del Rey triumphs, and three Club World Cup victories.
He wasn't just a midfielder—he was part of one of the most iconic trios in football history, alongside Sergio Busquets and Xavi. Together, they dominated the game, especially during Pep Guardiola’s era when Barcelona claimed historic trebles in 2009 and 2011. And Iniesta’s magic wasn't confined to Camp Nou. With Spain, he was the heartbeat of a golden generation, winning Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012, scoring 13 goals in 131 appearances.
After his emotional Barça exit in 2018, Iniesta took his talents to Japan, joining Vissel Kobe, where he added a league title and cup to his tally. Most recently, he had a brief yet impactful spell in the UAE with Emirates Club, finding the back of the net five times in just 20 appearances. If the rumors are true, then 8th October will be a sad day for any football fan. Football will lose one of its most gifted artists, who lit up the pitch every time he stepped onto it.
