Southampton Close to Signing Aaron Ramsdale as Key Talks With Arsenal Set to Take Place

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale has attracted significant interest during the course of the summer transfer window. However, it seems Southampton are emerging as the clear frontrunner for the Englishman’s signature.

According to reports from England, the Saints are exploring a loan move for the current Arsenal back-up goalkeeper. Southampton have reignited their pursuit of Aaron Ramsdale after their unsuccessful bid for Feyenoord's Justin Bijlow. The 26-year-old Dutch goalkeeper's move fell through after he failed a medical. The Saints had initially proposed a loan deal for Ramsdale, but Arsenal turned it down, as they are looking for a loan with an obligation to buy.

Aaron Ramsdale became a vital cog of Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal during the 2022/23 season in which they challenged Manchester City for the Premier League title. However, he lost his starting place to David Raya during the 2023/24 season, which meant that Ramsdale made just 10 appearance last season. Due to limited gametime, the 26-year-old shot-stopper has asked Arsenal’s hierarchy for a move away. And it looks like the Gunners are going to grant his wish. They have already agreed a deal in principle with Espanol’s Joan Garcia. If Ramsdale leaves, the Gunners will move forward with that deal.

Aaron Ramsdale has no shortage of admirers, with clubs like Wolves, Southampton, and Bournemouth showing interest in the English goalkeeper. Even Dutch giants Ajax are in the mix for his signature. However, Wolves and Bournemouth might be out of the running after securing the services of Sam Johnstone and Kepa, respectively. That narrows the race down to just Ajax and Southampton. And it's the Saints who have taken the initiative, already entering negotiations with Arsenal. According to Fabrizio Romano, “Southampton and Arsenal are advancing well in talks for Aaron Ramsdale deal! Negotiations underway, it could get done soon. All parties optimistic.”

Moving away from London could be exactly what Aaron Ramsdale needs. He would surely be the starting goalie at Southampton, which would give him the chance to remind everyone how good of a shot-stopper he is. For Southampton, signing Ramsdale would be a massive coup. Furthermore, his comfort with the ball at his feet fits seamlessly with Russell Martin’s vision for the team’s playing style. The 2024/25 Premier League season could be the backdrop for Aaron Ramsdale’s redemption arc.
