Whenever Barcelona takes on Real Madrid, the world stops to take notice of the sheer spectacle on hand. These two Spanish giants have dominated European football since the turn of the century, and games between the two are bound to create memories that last a lifetime.
There isn’t a bigger draw in world football than when Real Madrid face Barcelona. Over the years, these two teams have given us some truly thrilling and captivating matches. Fans are hoping that even in a preseason friendly, these two giants will deliver another unforgettable showdown.
The match will take place at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The stadium has a capacity of almost 83,000. And on Saturday, it is expected to be filled up to the rafters. But will fans in the USA get to witness an enthralling, end-to-end game, or will it end up being a lackluster, early preseason game?
More often than not, El Clasico delivers on its pre-match hype. Fans of a certain age may remember the El Clasico’s of the early 2010s, when the world stood to take notice. Those games had it all; a bitter rivalry between two opposing managers, which translated into a fierce on-pitch derby, two best players in Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo going head-to-head.
While El Clasico nowadays have remained competitive, fans do miss the good old days. However, a new exciting era of El Clasicos could be on the horizon. With the emergence of 17-year-old Lamine Yamal and the rise of exciting young talents like Pedri, Gavi, Pau Cubarsi, and Alejandro Balde, Barcelona boasts a group of youngsters ready to compete for trophies now and in the future.
However, these youngsters must settle quickly into a new environment in Barcelona. After a relatively successful two-season stint, Barcelona and Xavi parted ways. The Barca hierarchy decided to replace Xavi with former Germany and Bayern Munich coach, Hansi Flick. Fans of the Blaugrana recently got to witness Flick’s debut. A depleted Barcelona side drew 2-2 with English champions Manchester City on 31st July. They went on to win that game on penalties. A promising start, but still a lot of work to be done before catching up to Real Madrid’s brilliance.
Real Madrid have firmly established themselves as the best, most consistent team in Europe under Carlo Ancelotti. However, Florentino Perez hasn’t rested on his laurels, as he went out and signed arguably the best player in the world right now, Kylian Mbappe.
Brazilian wonderkid Endrick also joined Madrid this summer after Real agreed on a 60-million-euro fee with Palmeiras. Despite the massive off-season improvements, Real lost their first preseason game against AC Milan by 1-0. Endrick made his Real Madrid debut but failed to make any noticeable impact on the game. Los Blancos now face Barcelona in their next preseason game.
This El Clasico would be of great importance to both teams, as the players get ready to ramp up their fitness levels for the new season. However, Carlo Ancelotti will miss the services of several key players. Stars like Jude Bellingham, Fede Valverde, Kylian Mbappe, Dani Carvajal, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga are all on extended breaks after grueling Euro and Copa America campaigns.
However, key men like Luka Modric, Endrick, Arda Guler, Antonio Rudiger have all returned, while Vini Jr., Rodrygo, and Eder Militao are set to join the squad ahead of El Clasico.
Like Madrid, Barcelona will also have to deal with the absence of several key starters. Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie De Jong, Ronald Araujo and Ansu Fati will miss the game due to injuries. Furthermore, Barca starlets Pau Cubarsi, Fermin Lopez and Eric Garcia are on international duty with Spain at the Olympics. Meanwhile, Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres are on extended breaks after winning the Euros with Spain.
El Clasico has been a fixture of immense political and cultural importance to the cities of Madrid and Barcelona. And that importance has translated into a fierce and competitive derby. Head-to-head statistics prove that. In competitive matches, Los Blancos hold the advantage with 105 wins. Whereas the Blaugrana have got the upper hand of 100 occasions. 52 matches have ended in a draw. The first recorded match was back in the 1901/02 season.
The game is scheduled to take place on 4th August 2024 (Sunday). The match will kick off at 4:30 AM (Indian Standard Time).
