The start of the Premier League season is almost upon us. Now, this is a sentence many football fans have thirsted to hear. Manchester United will host Fulham at Old Trafford in the very first game of the 2024/25 Premier League Season.
With the start of the English top-flight just five days away, it’s that time of the year when every football fans makes a fool of himself/herself and tries to predict the Premier League table. So, here I am, giving it a go and trying to predict how the 2024/25 season will unfold. If I manage to get even one prediction right, I'll gladly take it. So, here's my take on how the Premier League table might look come May 2025.
The Saints endured an outstanding 2023/24 season in the Championship. However, the gap between the Premier League and Championship is widening. And for a team that conceded 63 goals in the Championship, Premier League survival appears to be a daunting task. Head coach Russell Martin has his work cut out.
Key Player: Adam Armstrong
It doesn’t feel right to put Leicester City in the relegation zone. They were on the peak of English football as recently as 2015. In fact, the Foxes were battling for a Champions League spot as recently as the 2021/22 season. However, due to poor decision making, the Foxes find themselves in their current predicament. They've lost the coach who led them to promotion, as well as their best player, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. On top of that, a looming possibility of points deduction hangs over their heads.
Key Player: Harry Winks
Wolves ended the 2023/24 season in terrible form, losing four of their last five games. Gary O’Neil did a stellar job guiding Wolves to a mid-table finish. However, I expect them to go down this season. They have lost key players like Pedro Neto and Max Kilman. Furthermore, they have brought in talented but unproven youngsters like Pedro Lima, Jorgen Strand Larsen and Rodrigo Gomes. If Wolves don’t make any significant signing, Premier League survival could be difficult.
Key Player: Joao Gomes
Ipswich Town are back in the Premier League after 22 years following back-to-back promotions, and I fully expect them to stay up. While many have predicted that the Tractor Boys will go straight down, I completely back Kieran McKenna to keep Ipswich up. Of course, many have correctly pointed out that Ipswich lacks Premier League quality players. But teams like that have survived before. Their form at Portman Road will be key to Premier League survival.
Key Players: Omari Hutchinson
Marco Silva has done a remarkable job at Fulham since he got them promoted in 2022. However, the loss of key starters like Willian, Tosin Adarabioyo and Joao Palhinha will definitely have an impact on Fulham’s standing. Although they possess Premier League quality players, I feel that Fulham will narrowly avoid relegation by the skin of their teeth. New signing Emile Smith Rowe could play a massive role in Fulham’s survival.
Key Player: Emile Smith Rowe
The Bees have become a Premier League fixture. And that’s some achievement, considering their low transfer net spend. They have constantly found diamonds in the rough by using sabermetrics and stats. Additionally, the stability brought by Danish coach Thomas Frank has made the club an attractive destination for youngsters. However, the uncertainty surrounding Ivan Toney’s future could derail their season. But I still expect them to stay up.
Key Player: Bryan Mbeumo
Last season, Forest was extremely lucky to survive relegation, following points deduction due to non-compliance with Premier League’s PSR rules. They struggled defensively, conceding 67 goals. However, with Nuno Espirito Santo at the helm, Forest has appeared more organized. After a full preseason, I anticipate Forest will push forward and establish themselves as a mid-table team under Nuno, though the threat of another points deduction still hangs over them.
Key Player: Anthony Elanga
This will be Everton's final season at Goodison Park, and they certainly won't want to end their time there embroiled in a relegation dogfight. Fortunately, that’s unlikely, because despite Sean Dyche's shortcomings, one thing is clear: he knows how to keep his teams in the Premier League. So, Everton fans get ready for a dull and boring season, which will end in mid-table mediocrity.
Key Player: Dwight McNeil
The Seagulls’ hierarchy decided to part ways with fire-brand manager Roberto De Zerbi at the end of last season. In his place, they hired 31-year-old Fabian Hurzeler. The German coach got St. Pauli promoted to the Bundesliga last season with an exciting brand of attacking football. However, the young German coach might find it difficult to get up to speed of the Premier League. But when he does, I expect Brighton to be a dangerous team, capable of defeating the best teams in the league.
Key Player: Lewis Dunk
Andoni Iraola’s football took time to click in Bournemouth. But when it clicked, the Cherries were literally one of the best teams in Premier League. From mid-November to the start of the new year, the Cherries maintained Champions League form. While I don’t expect them to clinch a European football spot, mid-table finish is feasible. However, they lost Dominic Solanke to Spurs. So, it will be fascinating to see how Iraola copes with the absence of such a key player.
Key Player: Alex Scott
Chelsea is a hot mess right now. Under Todd Boehly's ownership, the Blues have spent upwards of a billion dollars, but the results haven't followed. After a promising season under Mauricio Pochettino that saw them finish 6th, Chelsea made the surprising decision to fire him and bring in inexperienced Italian coach Enzo Maresca. Because of Boehly’s indecisiveness and unsustainable spending, Chelsea fans are in for another underwhelming season.
Key Player: Cole Palmer
The Hammers’ transfer business has sent shockwaves throughout the Premier League. In just one window, they have managed to sign players like Max Kilman, Crysensio Summerville, Niclas Fullkrug, Jean-Clair Todibo and many more, completely overhauling their squad to Julen Lopetegui’s preference. But despite their transfer business, the Hammers might struggle to find wins on a consistent basis in the Premier League. However, a deep domestic cup run could be on the cards.
Key Player: Mohamed Kudus
Aston Villa did remarkably well last season to achieve a Champions League spot. They were a breath of fresh air. However, the Villans will have to deal with a grueling Champions League campaign, which could stretch their squad thin. Furthermore, the Villans do not have any adequate replacements for two of their best players: Emi Martinez and Ollie Watkins. What if either one of them gets injured?
Key Player: Ollie Watkins
As you can see, I am backing the Eagles to have their best ever Premier League season. Palace have never managed to cross the 50-point mark. However, they will comfortably cross that mark during the 2024/25 season. Oliver Glasner has completely rejuvenated the club, and Palace can go places under his leadership. While the sale of Michael Olise hurts, they have ample amounts of talent to cover his departure.
Key Player: Eberechi Eze
It pains me to say this, but Spurs will struggle this season. Ange Postecoglou has completely revolutionized Tottenham’s style of play. However, there are significant drawbacks to his playing style, which Premier League opponents have ruthlessly exploited. Issues like difficulty handling set-pieces, lack of creativity on the flanks, and vulnerability to counterattacks are still present. It may take another season for Ange's system to fully take shape, though I genuinely hope I'm wrong in this prediction.
Key Player: Micky Van de Ven
It’s a new dawn for Liverpool fans. After nine years of success and joy under Jurgen Klopp, the 2024/25 season will see a new Liverpool coach at the helm. Arne Slot is the man chosen to replace Klopp, which is not an easy task. However, the Reds will play some scintillating football under Slot. But he might find it difficult to find consistency. And that’s the reason I expect Liverpool to finish fifth. They will still qualify for the Champions League, but by the narrowest of margins.
Key Player: Dominik Szoboszlai
The 2024/25 season is a make-or-break season for Erik Ten Hag. Either his team could continue to play subpar, unimaginative football, which would eventually get him sacked by early December, or they might hit their stride and secure a Champions League spot. Right now, I'm leaning towards the more optimistic outcome.
Key Player: Alejandro Garnacho
This might come as a shock to most football fans, but I think that City will endure their worst Premier League season since the 2016/17 season. This will be Pep Guardiola’s ninth season at the helm of City, and with so much success, monotony and fatigue sets in. Therefore, the Citizens might struggle to keep pace with the title frontrunner this season. Moreover, the 2024/25 season will be Pep’s last season as City’s head coach. Despite this, I still expect City to cross the 80-point mark and qualify for the Champions League.
Key Player: Phil Foden
Yes, you heard (or saw) it here first. Newcastle United will have their best Premier League season in more than twenty years. Last season, they faced challenges with injuries, largely due to the added strain of more fixtures from their Champions League campaign. However, with no European Cup competitions to worry about, Eddie Howe’s men can solely focus of the Premier League. As a result, Newcastle players will be fresher than their top-6 counterparts during the business end of the season.
Key Player: Bruno Guimaraes
As a hardcore Tottenham fan, I will dread this day if my prediction comes true. But I genuinely feel that the Gunners have the most complete team in the division. Arsenal possesses at least two talented players for each position on the pitch. After two seasons of pushing Pep and City for the Premier League title, I think Arsenal will finally clinch the trophy this year. The apprentice is set to outshine the master. However, the Gunners lack a quality No.9. This could derail Arsenal’s title push, but Kai Havertz and Gabrial Jesus have done well in the No.9 position in recent seasons.
Key Player: Martin Odegaard
