Last night, Newcastle United took a huge step towards their goal of winning their first major trophy since 1955 by defeating Arsenal by a scoreline of 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium. The Toon Army has been yearning for a trophy, and this might just be their year. A complete away performance in North London means that the Magpies have one foot in the EFL Cup final.
Now, Newcastle head into next month’s second leg at St. James’ Park as clear favorites to book a spot in the final. Their impressive victory at the Emirates defied expectations, especially since many had written off their chances against an Arsenal side that was unbeaten in 13 matches across all competitions. However, last night was anything but typical for Mikel Arteta’s men. The Gunners were unusually wasteful in front of the goal, taking 23 shots but managing to hit the target only three times. In stark contrast, Newcastle showcased a clinical edge, converting two of their four shots on target into goals.
Speaking after the match, Arteta didn’t shy away from acknowledging his team’s shortcomings: “The reality is that Newcastle were super-efficient with the chances they had, and we weren’t. Isak scored with the two chances they had. At this level, you need to be clinical.” While Arteta is left to lament Arsenal’s missed chances, Eddie Howe will be delighted with his team’s ruthless efficiency. Leading the charge was the red-hot Alexander Isak, who continues to dazzle with his form—netting his 10th goal in just nine games. The Swedish striker showcased his clinical touch in the 37th minute, pouncing on a perfectly placed ball across the six-yard box and rifling it into the top corner via the crossbar.
Arsenal came close to breaking the dealock early, with Martinelli curling a stunning effort against the post from the edge of the box. Newcastle, meanwhile, found themselves under immense pressure, resorting to frantic defending during a chaotic goalmouth scramble. The Gunners continued to push, with Jurriën Timber heading over from close range and Kai Havertz missing a golden opportunity after the break, failing to connect with a header when the goal was at his mercy.
By that point, however, Newcastle had already doubled their lead. In the 50th minute, Jacob Murphy delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Alexander Isak, whose sharp first-time shot forced a save from Raya. Unfortunately for Arsenal, the ball spilled into the path of Anthony Gordon, who coolly swept home the rebound to make it 2-0. The Gunners piled on the pressure late on in order to get something out of the game. However, Newcastle’s rearguard held firm. Now, the Gunners travel to Tyneside for the second leg, which is scheduled to take place on 5th February.
