The UEFA Nations League has already served up some pretty exciting matchups, and today's showdown between the Netherlands and Germany is no exception. It’s a matchup that has fans buzzing with anticipation and the clash promises to be one of the highlights of the competition so far.
Both nations have started their Nations League campaign in fine form. Germany outclassed Hungary by a scoreline of 5-0 in their Nations League opener, while Netherlands secured a 5-2 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. With both teams scoring five goals in their Nations League opener, tonight’s match at the Johan Cruyff Arena promises to be a goal-laden affair. Will Julian Nagelsmann’s new-look Germany come out on top, or will the electric atmosphere of the Johan Cruyff Arena propel the Dutch to victory?
Holland started their Nations League campaign on fire. Without Memphis Depay, Ronald Koeman rolled the dice on Joshua Zirkzee, and the Manchester United forward seized his chance, opening the scoring in the 13th minute with a slick flicked header. Bosnia and Herzegovina quickly responded, leveling the score through Ermedin Demirovic just 14 minutes later. But just before the halftime whistle, Tijjani Reijnders restored the Dutch lead with a well-timed strike.
The second half was all about the Dutch dominance as they unleashed a flurry of goals. Cody Gakpo, Wout Weghorst, and Xavi Simons all got in on the action, capping off a thrilling night for the Oranje and showcasing their attacking firepower in emphatic fashion. After their commanding 5-2 victory, the Oranje are aiming to finally break their long-standing title drought, dating back to their 1988 Euros triumph. They’ve kicked off their Nations League campaign in fine form, but a real test of their championship credentials awaits in their next match against Germany.
If you thought Holland’s performance was impressive, Germany’s 5-0 thrashing of Hungary was a masterclass of its own. The Germans completely dominated a Hungarian side which they defeated 2-0 at the Euros. Goals from Kai Havertz, Niclas Fullkrug, Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala and Aleksander Pavlovic completed a stunning rout. Under Julian Nagelsmann, Germany is starting to look like serious contenders. Since taking over from Hansi Flick, Nagelsmann has guided the German national team to 8 wins in 14 matches, and they were unlucky to exit the Euros at the quarterfinal stage against Spain, despite being one of the standout teams of the tournament. Now, they will aim for a Nations League title before shifting their focus to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Germany’s transition to a younger squad is in full swing under Julian Nagelsmann, with stalwarts like Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller, Ilkay Gündogan, and Toni Kroos no longer in the mix. Julian Nagelsmann has entrusted Joshua Kimmich with the captain's armband, and the Bayern Munich midfielder will lead his country for the 10th time on Tuesday.
Nagelsmann’s exciting front four is likely to feature again, with Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala set to support either Kai Havertz or Niclas Füllkrug—or maybe even both! Füllkrug has been in sizzling form, scoring 14 goals in just 22 international appearances. With Leroy Sané sidelined due to injury and Antonio Rüdiger being rested, we can expect Jonathan Tah to partner Nico Schlotterbeck in the heart of Germany’s defense.
On the Dutch side, Joshua Zirkzee, fresh off scoring his first goal for the Netherlands over the weekend, will be eager to keep his spot. However, Brian Brobbey, Wout Weghorst, and Cody Gakpo—who could operate as a false nine—are also in contention to start up front.
In the midfield, veterans Marten de Roon and Georginio Wijnaldum will be key, but Ronald Koeman has made some notable omissions this month. Daley Blind is out, and Koeman’s public feud with Steven Bergwijn over his move to the Saudi Pro League means Bergwijn won't feature either. Despite injuries to Micky van de Ven and Joey Veerman, there was a heartwarming moment when Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber made his comeback against Bosnia, joining his brother Quinten on the pitch as they represented their country together for the first time.
The game is scheduled to take place on 11th September 2024 (Tuesday) at Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam. The match will kick off at 12:15 AM (Indian Standard Time).
