It looks like the Mohamed Salah contract saga is finally reaching its endgame. After months of swirling rumors and cryptic hints, Liverpool has officially put a contract proposal on the table for their Egyptian superstar. With Salah’s current deal set to expire in less than a year, the uncertainty has loomed large over Liverpool’s title ambitions. However, the end of this long-running saga finally feels within reach.
Yesterday, the Athletics’ David Ornstein broke the news after he tweeted that “Liverpool make opening contract offer to Mohamed Salah. Does not mean agreement done or close (any outcome expected to take time).” This news sent Liverpool fans into a frenzy, as Salah has played an instrumental role in the Reds’ recent success. This season, the 32-year-old has led Liverpool's charge for the Premier League title, scoring 13 goals and providing 8 assists in the first 14 PL games of the season. After Salah’s jaw-dropping display against Newcastle, the calls to extend his contract only grew louder. The message from the fans was clear, with the Kop unfurling a cheeky banner during a recent match that read, “He Fires a Bow, Now Give Mo His Dough.”
So, what’s holding the Liverpool hierarchy back? The answer: Salah’s age. The Egyptian is now 32 years old, and with him already earning a whopping 400,000-pounds per week, any extension will be a massive undertaking. Therefore, the Reds have always insisted on a one-year extension. However, Salah’s camp had their sights set on a three-year extension. Up until now, this was the stumbling block. But after the recent round of talks, both parties appear to have reached a compromise. According to some reports in England, Liverpool have offered the Egyptian a two-year contract extension, which will likely make him the highest paid player in the Premier League. It’s a compromise that could finally put an end to the saga and ensure that Salah continues to dazzle Anfield for seasons to come.
Besides Salah, Liverpool have also offered contract extensions to Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Having said that, there’s still no agreement in sight for Salah, Van Dijk, or Trent Alexander-Arnold, despite growing optimism around Anfield that the trio will remain at Liverpool. Time isn’t exactly on Liverpool’s side either. With their current deals winding down, all three players will be free to negotiate pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs starting January 1. That’s not a scenario the Reds want to face. While these negotiations may not wrap up overnight, the club is clearly pulling out all the stops to secure their prized assets. For now, it’s a waiting game—but one that promises plenty of drama in the weeks ahead.
