It’s fair to say that Mauricio Pochettino is the most high-profile coach the USMNT has had in recent memory. The Argentine arrives with a proven track record at top European clubs like Tottenham Hotspur, PSG, and Chelsea. And American “soccer” fans can’t wait to see how the USMNT evolves under the Argentine’s leadership.
The Mauricio Pochettino era is about to begin, as US Men’s National team face Panama and Mexico in international friendlies this month. It’s a start of an exciting new era for USMNT, following an underwhelming few years under the guidance of Gregg Berhalter. The last few months of Berhalter’s tenure were especially disappointing, as the Americans failed to get out of the group stages during the 2024 Copa America, despite being the host nation. Many fans criticized Berhalter for his conservative tactics and lack of focus on youth development.
But with Pochettino at the helm, things are set to change. The Argentine has built his impressive coaching career on a foundation of youth development and exhilarating, attacking football. Known for transforming raw talent into superstars—think Harry Kane, Dele Alli, and Cole Palmer—he brings a fresh perspective that has American soccer fans buzzing with anticipation. With Pochettino at the helm, there’s a palpable sense of optimism and hope for a revitalized USMNT.
Ahead of their match-up against Panama and Mexico, Pochettino revealed the formation he’s going to use in the coming games. He said, “We will use two systems. 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3. And from there to develop our way to play. (We will) see how we can adapt and create the partnership between them to find the best way to play and be exciting going forward. I think soccer needs to be an exciting game for the USA citizens, they need to enjoy every time they go to the stadium." The Argentine added further, “We have amazing players but the most important thing is they need to believe. There are two phases of the game you need to control. With the ball, we are a coaching staff that loves to dominate the games and the possession. To have the ball because I believe it is the best way to defend, and second because we want to win by playing closer to the opposition’s goal.”
Mauricio Pochettino’s words will excite American fans, who for far too long have witnessed uninspiring, conservative football. Now, for the first time in ages, the USMNT will be ready to kick off games with a more attacking mindset. Pochettino’s debut is set for 12th October when the team welcomes Panama, followed by a thrilling clash against their archrivals, Mexico, on 15th October .
