German Football fans are reeling following Manuel Neuer’s shock retirement from international football. The German shot-stopper has played an integral role in Die Mannschaft’s 2014 FIFA World Cup win.
This news comes in stark contrast to reports, which suggested that Neuer wouldn’t hang his boots, and fight for a place in Germany’s 2026 World Cup squad. However, the legendary goalkeeper has revealed that he will step down from his role with immediate effect. Neuer posted an emotional video on his official Instagram account. During the video, Neuer said, “Today my career with the national team ends. This decision was not easy for me, it has been more than 15 years since I made my debut here. Everyone knows the highlight, the victory against Argentina in the Maracana at the World Cup. My thanks go to all the companions, all the DFB employees, the coaches, the goalkeeping coaches, the staff members and of course the teammates. And of course to you, dear fans, you supported me in every situation. Dear fans, a huge thank you from me. I loved wearing this jersey.”
Manuel Neuer represented Germany on 124 separate occasions during his long and illustrious international career. However, Neuer’s last game for Germany wouldn’t be a pleasant memory, as Spain defeated Germany in the Quarterfinals of the 2024 Euros. Coincidentally, Manuel Neuer is the fourth player from Germany’s 2024 Euros squad to announce his international retirement, following in the footsteps of Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller, and Ilkay Gundogan. It’s true a new era for the German National team.
