Manchester City on the Verge of Completing Vitor Reis’ Signing From Palmeiras

Manchester City are having an abysmal season by their lofty standards. However, reinforcements are coming for Pep Guardiola. The Cityzens have already bolstered their defense with the addition of Lens' Abdukodir Khusanov. Now, they’re closing in on another promising young talent, with Vitor Reis’ move from Palmeiras nearing completion.

On 15th January, Manchester City struck a deal with Palmeiras to bring 19-year-old Vitor Reis to the Etihad this month. The Cityzens will pay the Brazilian club around £29.4 million for the highly-rated center-back, with no bonuses attached to the agreement. Reis, currently in Brazil, is awaiting clearance from Palmeiras to travel to England and finalize the move. The talented defender was also on the radar of several other Premier League clubs, including Brighton. However, City have swooped in to secure his signature, making him their second defensive acquisition of the January window after signing Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens for £33 million.

Palmeiras president Leila Pereira confirmed City’s formal bid was submitted on Monday, and by Wednesday, an agreement in principle had been reached. Moreover, Palmeiras haven’t even registered Vitor Reis for the 2025 Campeonato Paulista. The 19-year-old also didn’t participate in Palmeiras' training session on Tuesday. However, he was spotted at the club’s training facilities saying goodbye to his teammates and staff members of the club. According to Fabrizio Romano, the 19-year-old has traveled to England to complete the last remaining formalities. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Manchester City’s new signing Victor Reis travels from Brazil to England today to complete his move. Reis will arrive with his agents as clubs have already approved all documents.”

If Vitor Reis’ transfer to Manchester City goes through, it will set a new record for the highest fee ever paid for a defender from the Brazilian league. The £29.4 million deal surpasses the €20 million PSG spent on Lucas Beraldo's move from São Paulo in 2023. Initially, Palmeiras hoped to negotiate a loan-back arrangement that would keep Reis with them until after the FIFA Club World Cup in July, but they ultimately accepted City’s offer for an immediate transfer. The 19-year-old has already showcased his potential, netting two goals in 22 appearances since his promotion to Palmeiras’ first team in June 2024.

The Verdao are facing a tough issue with talent drain, and Vitor Reis' move is just the latest in a string of young stars heading out the door. The Brazilian club has already seen promising teenagers like Endrick head to Real Madrid, Willian Estevao join Chelsea, and Luis Guilherme make the switch to West Ham. But that’s to be expected, the more pressing question now is: Can Reis adapt to the fast-paced, high-intensity world of the Premier League?
