Liverpool fans held their breath as Trent Alexander-Arnold limped off in the 25th minute against Aston Villa, with what looked like a hamstring injury. Fears of a long-term absence quickly spread, but the club has since provided a reassuring update. The 26-year-old has fortunately avoided a major hamstring issue, though he’ll still be sidelined for the next 2-3 weeks.
While Trent will still miss some Liverpool games, his injury could have been much worse if Arne Slot hadn’t decided to withdraw him in the 25th minute. By coming off early, Trent is now battling to be fit for Liverpool’s next game, which is a Premier League clash against Southampton after the international break. Having said that, Alexander-Arnold is certainly ruled out for England’s Nations League ties against Greece and Republic of Ireland. Liverpool manager also held the same opinion during his post-match press conference. He said, “It is difficult to say how serious it is but it is always serious if a player goes out in the first half. Not because I didn’t like him but he asked for it himself, he asked for it because he felt something. So that is first of all not a good sign. It is always difficult so close after the game to tell you exactly what it is but let’s wait and see. I would be surprised if we will see him playing for the England national team this week but hopefully he can.”
Following his injury, Trent Alexander-Arnold will definitely withdraw from England’s squad. With Liverpool’s fixtures getting trickier after the international break, Arne Slot would hope that he can have his vice-captain fit and ready for those fixtures. The Reds face Southampton after the international break before embarking on a daunting run of fixtures, which sees them face the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Everton in a span of 10 days. Besides Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool are also fretting over the fitness of Alisson Becker, Harvey Elliot, Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota.
With such a vast injury list already, Slot will hope that none of his key players pick up a knock while on national duty. The international break has come at the worst possible time for the Reds. Fresh off claiming a comfortable 2-0 win over Aston Villa – which saw them extend their lead at the top of the table to five points – Liverpool would have liked to continue their momentum. However, the international break has thrown spanner in the works. Now, they will have to wait and hope their squad returns unscathed to resume their campaign.
