On Sunday, Real Madrid breezed past Real Betis to secure their second win of the 2024/25 La Liga campaign. Two goals from Kylian Mbappe were enough for Los Blancos to head into the international break on 8 points in four games.
Real Madrid remain unbeaten, with two wins and two draws. However, their arch nemesis Barcelona have already opened up a four-point gap, as they have secured victories in all four games. After winning the UEFA Super Cup a record sixth time, Los Blancos started their La Liga campaign with a 1-1 draw against minnows RCD Mallorca. They followed that underwhelming performance with a dominant 3-0 victory against Real Valladolid. Goals from Fede Valverde, Brahim Diaz and Endrick secured Real’s first win of the La Liga campaign. In their next match, the Spanish giants were held to their second stalemate in three games by La Palmas. A 69th minute Vinicius Jr. penalty rescued Madrid from an embarrassing defeat.
Observant readers might have noticed that Real Madrid’s marquee summer signing Kylian Mbappe didn’t register his name on the scoresheet in Real’s first three La Liga games. The French captain had come under immense scrutiny for his lackluster performances in the famous white shirt of Real. However, the Frenchman silenced his doubters on Sunday after netting a brace against Real Betis.
Having said that, Los Blancos started the game cautiously. In the first 60 minutes, Vinicius Junior came closest to opening the scoring, as his shot rattled the woodwork. The lack of action made Madrid fans increasingly frustrated and soon one or two groans of disappointment started to ring out at the Bernabeu. But as the game drew on, Real grabbed a foothold. And in the 67th minute, Kylian Mbappe scored his first La Liga goal. However, most of the credit should go to Fede Valverde, whose exquisite flick unlocked a dogged Betis defense. With the goal at his mercy, Mbappe calmly slotted the ball under Rui Silva’s legs.
Soon after his first goal, Kylian Mbappe got the opportunity to score his second of the night. In the 74th minute, Real were awarded a penalty, as Vinicius was brought down by Rui Silva. Instead of taking the penalty himself, the Brazilian superstar handed Mbappe the chance to seal the win. Up stepped Mbappe to take the resulting penalty, and there was only one outcome, as he sent Rui Silva the wrong way before slotting in a confident penalty. This win takes Real Madrid to the second spot in La Liga standings, four points behind league leaders Barcelona. Now, Kylian Mbappe jets off to France for his international duties where he will lead France. He returns to action for Los Blancos on 14th September against Real Sociedad.
