If there is a manager who has garnered a reputation for not mincing his words, it’s Jose Mourinho. Over the course of his illustrious managerial career, the Portuguese has never shied away from addressing topics in a straightforward manner. And he did so recently, when a few reports linked Cristiano Ronaldo with a move to Fenerbahce. However, he shut down the speculation with an emphatic response.
Yesterday, rumors of Cristiano Ronaldo making a sensational move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce have been making the rounds, especially with his Al Nassr contract set to expire in 2025. However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has poured cold water on the idea, confirming that no discussions have taken place between Ronaldo and the Turkish side. As Fenerbahce’s boss, Jose Mourinho also wasted no time in putting those whispers to rest, shutting them down with his trademark decisiveness. During a press conference, the 61-year-old manager said, “News about Cristiano Ronaldo to Fenerbahce are ridiculous. Cristiano might come to Istanbul to eat because it's in the middle of the road between Saudi and Portugal. Or maybe he'll come see his old friend Jose, we can eat at my hotel.”
Mourinho famously worked with Cristiano Ronaldo during his spell with Real Madrid. The Portuguese duo managed to win the Copa del Rey, Supercopa de Espana and a La Liga together. However, the two parted ways after Mourinho vacated the managerial position at the Bernabeu after the 2012/13 season. Since then, the 61-year-old coach has managed clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, Spurs, Roma and now Fenerbahçe. However, his time in Turkey has panned out as expected. He was brought in to finally end Fener’s long wait for a trophy. But after 12 games in the Turkish Super Lig, Fenerbahce are already five points behind Galatasaray.
Besides that, Mourinho’s time in Turkey has been marred by controversies. At 61, Jose Mourinho is no stranger to controversy, and his recent remarks about players hesitating to move to Turkish clubs from Europe have certainly turned heads. Add to that a fine and a touchline ban following his outspoken criticism of match officials during Fenerbahce's dramatic 3-2 victory over Trabzonspor earlier this month, and Mourinho is once again at the center of the spotlight.
