In a Nations League game filled with twists and turns, the eventual end was sort of anti-climactic. Italy raced to a two-goal lead within the first 25 minutes, but the Azzurri saw their lead evaporate as they settled for a hard-fought 2-2 draw with Belgium at the Stadio Olimpico.
Italy, who led their Nations League group after securing wins against France and Israel in September, raced to a two-goal lead within 25 minutes. Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso wasted no time, getting Italy off to a dream start by scoring in the very first minute. A clever combination between Sandro Tonali and Mateo Retegui at the halfway line set things in motion. Tonali then released Federico Di Marco down the flank, and his pinpoint cross found Cambiaso, who bundled it in. Buoyed by their recent form, the Italians meant business, as they created several big chances within the first 25 minutes.
Their second goal came in the 24th minute, and it was well deserved. Once again, Cambiaso was in the thick of it, latching onto a perfectly threaded pass from Di Marco. He curled a shot from the edge of the box that was parried by Belgium's Keon Casteels, but the rebound fell kindly for Retegui, who made no mistake in doubling Italy’s lead. At this point, the Azzurri were on course for another commanding Nations League win. However, the course of the game completely changed in the 40th minute when Lorenzo Pellegrini received a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Arthur Theate. The momentum completely shifted in Belgium’s favor, and the Red Devils immediately capitalized.
Just two minutes after Pellegrini received his marching orders, Maxim De Cuyper halved the deficit after a well-worked freekick routine. The once joyous Stadio Olimpico crowd were now nervy at the halftime break. However, despite being a man down, Italy had a golden opportunity to restore their two-goal advantage, but Davide Frattesi spurned the chance. Soon, the Azzurri would live to rue those missed opportunities, as Belgium’s dominance finally got them an equalizer. In the 61st minute, Wout Faes’ header was turned in by Leandro Trossard at the near post.
After the equalizer, the match remained tightly contested, with both Italy and Belgium creating opportunities to snatch a winner. Despite the late drama, neither side could break the deadlock, and the game ended in a hard-fought draw. The result keeps Italy at the top of their Nations League group with 7 points. However, France and Belgium are hot on their heels. Up next for the Azzurri is a clash against Israel on Monday, while Belgium will host France in what promises to be a thrilling Nations League showdown.
