Liverpool fans must count their blessings every time Mohamed Salah steps onto the pitch. The Egyptian has bailed them out from tricky situations on more than one occasion, and he did so on Sunday. The Reds came from a goal down to win the game against Southampton. And you guessed it right, it was Salah who played the star turn, scoring a brace and more importantly the winning goal.
Liverpool’s victory over Southampton meant that they are now eight points ahead of title rivals and second-placed side Manchester City. With such a massive advantage, the Reds are the favorites to win the 2024/25 Premier League title. Yet, what should have been a celebratory moment for Reds fans quickly took a worrying turn after Mohamed Salah’s post-match comments cast a shadow over the triumph. Following their 2-3 win over the Saints, Salah stated that he’s “disappointed” by the progress the Liverpool hierarchy has shown during their contract negotiations. He said, “Well, we are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay in the club. I’m probably more out than in.” The Egyptian added further, “You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end it is not in my hands. As I said before, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future.”
When asked if he felt disappointed by Liverpool’s lack of a contract offer, Mohamed Salah didn’t hold back. “Of course, yeah. I love the fans. The fans love me. In the end, it is not in my hands or the fans’ hands. Let’s wait and see,” he admitted, leaving little doubt about his feelings on the matter. Despite the frustration, Salah revealed he hasn’t addressed the situation with the club yet. “I’m not going to retire soon, so I’m just playing, focusing on the season, and I’m trying to win the Premier League and hopefully the Champions League as well,” he said, keeping his focus on Liverpool’s silverware ambitions. However, the Egyptian King didn’t shy away from his disappointment. “I’m disappointed, but we will see,” he added, hinting at the growing uncertainty surrounding his future at Anfield.
Mo Salah has been nothing short of sensational this season, with 12 goals and 10 assists in just 18 games, playing a huge part in Liverpool’s blistering form. So, it’s baffling to many that his contract hasn’t been extended yet. However, despite the growing tension, Liverpool’s management remains optimistic. They’ve had positive talks with Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, and understand that a deal for their highest-paid player was never going to be a quick fix—especially with Salah reportedly earning £350,000 a week. If they do manage to strike an agreement, it’s likely that Salah will become the highest-paid player in the Premier League, a fitting reward for his incredible performances. The big question now is whether Liverpool and Salah’s camp can find common ground and bring an end to this contractual standoff.
