Yesterday, England captain Harry Kane made his 100th appearance for the Three Lions. On his special night, Kane proved to be the match winner, as his brace led England to a 2-0 win over Finland in the UEFA Nations League.
England dominated the game from start to finish, boasting 78.5% possession and firing 22 shots compared to Finland’s mere two. Yet, for all their control, England initially struggled to make their dominance count. Kane thought he had opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, only to have his goal ruled out for offside. Despite relentless pressure, Finland’s goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky kept the scoreline level with a string of impressive saves in the first half.
After the break, England picked up right where they left off, repeatedly testing Hradecky. Kane was England’s biggest threat, with a curling free-kick and a spectacular bicycle kick both denied by the Finnish keeper. It seemed like Hradecky might single-handedly snatch a famous result for Finland at Wembley. However, the milestone man, Harry Kane, finally broke the deadlock. In the 57th minute, Trent Alexander-Arnold threaded a perfect through ball, and Kane pounced, unleashing a powerful strike that ricocheted off the post and into the net.
After taking the lead, England looked eager to add more goals, with substitutes Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke driving most of their attacks. Harry Kane doubled his tally in the 76th minute following a slick combination between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Madueke that sliced through Finland’s defense. Finding himself with plenty of space in the box, Madueke unselfishly squared the ball to Kane, who calmly slotted it past Hradecky’s outstretched arms, sealing England’s victory on his 100th appearance. Kane was soon substituted by interim manager Lee Carsley and left the pitch to a standing ovation from the Wembley crowd.
Despite back-to-back wins in their Nations League matches, England sit second in League B Group 2, tied on points with Greece. They’ll have a chance to leapfrog Greece when the two sides meet on October 11, followed by another match against Finland on October 13. Finland, meanwhile, will take on Ireland on October 11 before facing England once more.
