FIFA Reveal Nominees For the Best FIFA Men’s Player of 2024

The Ballon d’Or may hold the crown as football’s most prestigious individual honor, but the FIFA Men’s Player of the Year award is quickly becoming a strong contender for that title. Following the whirlwind of drama and debate surrounding the 2024 Ballon d’Or, all eyes are now on FIFA's Best Player award. Adding to the excitement, FIFA has just dropped its list of nominees for the prestigious award.

The star-studded list of nominees includes the who’s who of the football world. Real Madrid, the reigning European champions, have a strong representation. Players like Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham, Dani Carvajal, Federico Valverde and Toni Kroos are all in the running to clinch the award. Jude Bellingham is undoubtedly one of the leading contenders, and it’s no surprise why. With a jaw-dropping 23 goals and 11 assists, the midfielder was the heartbeat of Real Madrid’s incredible La Liga and Champions League double. On the international stage, he continued to shine, driving England all the way to the Euro 2024 final.

Standing shoulder to shoulder with him in the race is his electric teammate, Vinícius Jr. The Brazilian dazzled fans with 24 goals and 11 assists during a stellar domestic season. His crowning moment? A sensational hat-trick in the Spanish Super Cup final that left Barcelona reeling and secured yet another trophy for Los Blancos. But while Vinícius celebrates those highs, he’s still seething over missing out on the Ballon d’Or, controversially awarded to Manchester City’s Rodri. The Brazilian star feels robbed of football’s most prestigious prize—but now, the FIFA Men’s Player of the Year award offers him a chance for redemption.

Manchester City’s Rodri is back in the spotlight, chasing another major accolade just months after edging out Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Jr. to claim the Ballon d’Or. Joining him on the FIFA Men’s Player of the Year shortlist is his unstoppable teammate Erling Haaland, whose staggering 34 goals across all competitions were instrumental in securing City’s fourth straight Premier League crown. The list also boasts some familiar heavyweights like Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé and rising stars such as Lamine Yamal and Florian Wirtz.

But let’s talk about the name that’s sure to spark the most debate—Lionel Messi. Unlike the Ballon d’Or snub earlier this year, Messi finds himself among the nominees for this award, despite swapping Europe’s elite for the MLS with Inter Miami. Many believe Argentina’s Copa América triumph earned him this nod. But as much as Messi's brilliance transcends leagues and continents, his chances of winning this time around seem slim.
