Erling Haaland Commits Long-Term Future to Manchester City With Record Nine-and-a-Half Year Contract Extension

January has been a busy month for Manchester City. Not only are they on the verge of completing the signing of Abdulodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Omar Marmoush, but they have now reached an agreement with Erling Haaland on a staggering nine-and-a-half year contract extension. This extension will keep Haaland at the Etihad Stadium until 2034.

Erling Haaland’s previous contract with Manchester City was set to run until June 2027. However, with his new extension, the prolific forward is now tied to the club until he’s nearly 34 years old. Perhaps the most significant aspect of this fresh deal is the removal of the release clause from his previous contract, meaning no club can swoop in and sign Haaland without City’s approval. That said, the new agreement does include a release clause, but it won’t come into play until after the 2028/29 season.

While exact figures remain under wraps, this deal is believed to be one of the most lucrative contracts in sports history, underscoring the strong relationship between Haaland and City. After signing the lucrative contract extension, Haaland said, “It has been amazing, and it’s been it’s been like a dream these two past two and a half years but I’m really looking forward to what’s next and for the future. “I’m going to stay for a long time so now I can fully focus on getting better because (I know) I’m going to stay for such a long time. So, (the) full focus (is) on performing and getting better and to give all the fans what they want.”

Since his €60 million move from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, Erling Haaland has been nothing short of sensational, racking up an astonishing 111 goals in just 126 appearances. During this time, he’s helped Manchester City secure two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, the Champions League, and the UEFA Super Cup. This latest long-term commitment means Haaland is set to outlast Pep Guardiola at the Etihad, with the Catalan mastermind currently contracted until 2027 after extending his deal last November. For City fans, locking down arguably the world’s best striker is a massive boost, especially in a season where the team has struggled to hit their usual heights.

While Erling Haaland’s massive contract extension is a massive boost to City fans, their immediate future is much more precarious. The Cityzens are still awaiting the outcome of a battle against the Premier League over alleged 115 financial rule breaches, which is expected to bring a verdict this year. If found guilty, City could be relegated from the Premier League. However, this hasn’t hindered Pep Guardiola’s transfer plan, as the Cityzens are on the verge of completing three massive winter signings – Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens, Vitor Reis from Palmeiras and Omar Marmoush from Frankfurt.
