Former Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has agreed to become the Three Lions’ new head coach after Gareth Southgate resigned following England’s heartbreaking loss to Spain in Euro 2024 final. The 51-year-old will be England’s first German-born boss.
According to SKY Germany, Tuchel has signed an 18-month contract with the FA, which would start from 1st January 2025. No comments have been made as of yet by either party. However, if SKY Germany’s reports are true, then England’s current interim manager Lee Carsley will be in-charge for games against Greece and Republic of Ireland in November. While the English FA haven’t confirmed the hiring of Tuchel, the official announcement could come as soon as Wednesday morning after advanced talks between the German boss and FA progressed rapidly on Tuesday. English FA chief executive Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott have been in talks with Thomas Tuchel since last month. And it finally looks like they have got their man.
Thomas Tuchel will be England’s third foreign coach, following in the footsteps of Fabio Capello, Sven-Goran Eriksson. The 51-year-old German comes into his new job on the back of a trophy-less season with Bayern Munich. However, Tuchel has won trophies everywhere he has managed. Thomas Tuchel is undoubtedly among the elite managers in football, and England securing his services would be seen as a massive win. It’s an even bigger deal considering European powerhouses like Manchester United and AC Milan were eyeing him. He was even in discussions with the Red Devils over the summer, but they ultimately stuck with Erik ten Hag.
Tuchel’s impressive record in knockout tournaments makes him a perfect match for an England side that has struggled to cross the final hurdle in major competitions. Fans are hopeful that under Tuchel's leadership, the Three Lions can finally break their 58-year trophy drought. His pedigree speaks for itself—Tuchel guided Chelsea to an unexpected Champions League triumph in 2021 and added the Club World Cup and Super Cup to his list of accomplishments. He also led PSG to the Champions League final in 2020. Tuchel’s familiarity with several key English players—like Harry Kane, Chelsea captain Reece James, and Manchester United’s Mason Mount—only strengthens the belief that he’s the right man to take England to the next level.
While the FA has yet to officially announce Thomas Tuchel's appointment, multiple news outlets are reporting that the confirmation is expected to come at 1:30 PM (GMT) on Wednesday. According to SKY Sports News senior reporter Rob Dorsett, “We are expecting a news conference at Wembley at 1.30pm on Wednesday which chief executive Mark Bullingham will attend, answer some questions and explain his decision. It's not yet been confirmed if Tuchel will be at that news conference, but I would fully expect him to be.”
