Denmark vs Spain – UEFA Nations League – Preview, Team News and Updates

We have reached the business end of the Nations League group stage, and several teams have a chance to book their spot in the knockout round of the competition. Spain and Denmark are two nations who are odds-on favorite to advance into the next round. But here’s the twist—these two sides face off tonight, with just one spot guaranteed for the next round. With everything on the line, it's set to be a thrilling showdown.

Both Spain and Denmark have been two of the most consistent teams in the Nations League. Spain currently top League A Group 4 after accumulating 10 points from four games, while Denmark have accrued 7 points from four games. Their sole defeat of the tournament came against Spain, when La Roja defeated them by a scoreline of 1-0. However, Denmark now have a chance to seek revenge and jeopardize Spain’s push for a guaranteed knockout round spot. For Denmark, this is a must-win game, as they still haven’t secured a spot in the last eight of the tournament. A loss to Spain could have a detrimental impact on Denmark’s hopes of qualifying for the knockout rounds. With so much on the line for both nations, which side will rise to the occasion and emerge victorious in this pivotal Nations League showdown?

Denmark vs Spain – Match Preview

The 1992 European champions have had a rollercoaster ride in this Nations League campaign. With two wins, a draw, and a single loss, Denmark sits on 7 points—three clear of third-place Serbia and three behind top-of-the-table Spain. They kicked off their run with impressive 2-0 victories over Switzerland and Serbia, but a narrow 1-0 loss to Spain and a disappointing 2-2 draw with Switzerland have thrown a bit of a wrench in their plans. Now, a win tonight against Spain could lock in Denmark’s spot in the tournament’s last eight. But there's an added layer of tension: tonight marks Brian Riemer’s debut as Denmark’s manager. Fresh off his stint at Anderlecht, Riemer’s first task is to steer Denmark to a win—anything less, and their Nations League hopes could be in serious jeopardy. Talk about a baptism by fire. Fortunately, Denmark hold a slight advantage over Spain heading into this clash, as they’ll be taking on La Roja at the Parken – a venue where they’ve yet to taste defeat in this tournament.

Contrary to Denmark’s current predicament, Spain have already booked their spot in the knockout rounds of the competition. Now, there is the small matter of securing their top spot in League A Group 4. A win against Denmark will rubber-stamp their progression into the next round as the leaders of League A Group 4. However, a loss tonight would throw the group wide open, as the Danes are just three points adrift from them. Having said that, La Roja have been one of the most consistent performers in the tournament, and they are the odds-on favorite to come out on top tonight. As the reigning Nations League champions as well as reigning European champions, Spain are considered one of the favorites to win this iteration of the Nations League. Moreover, Denmark have managed just two wins in their last 17 encounters with Spain, with their most recent triumph being a 1-0 victory in a World Cup qualifier all the way back in March 1993.

Denmark vs Spain – Team News and Updates

Spain's lineup faces a few changes due to injuries, with Pau Torres sidelined by a muscle strain and several key players missing, including Unai Simon, Dani Carvajal, Rodri, Gavi, and rising star Lamine Yamal. Alvaro Morata, who had been uncertain after a training injury with AC Milan, is expected to start as captain, aiming to add to his impressive tally of 37 international goals. Supporting him in attack, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo are likely contenders for forward positions, while Pedro Porro should handle duties at right-back. On the left, Alex Grimaldo and Marc Cucurella are competing for a starting role, while young talents Aitor Paredes, Marc Casado, and Samu Omorodion hope to make their national debuts in Friday’s clash.

On Denmark's side, new head coach Brian Riemer has some big decisions ahead, particularly in setting up the attack. Rasmus Hojlund, with seven goals from 20 appearances for Denmark despite a quiet start at Manchester United, is expected to lead the line, while Kasper Dolberg and Yussuf Poulsen offer additional options up front. Christian Eriksen returns from injury and is set to start, bringing experience to the midfield, where he may be joined by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Morten Hjulmand. In defense, Joachim Andersen, who has shown strong form at Fulham this season, is likely to secure a spot in the back three, while promising talent Patrick Dorgu could earn just his fourth cap as the left-sided wing-back.
