Arsenal started their UEFA Champions League campaign with a scrappy draw at Atalanta’s Gewiss Stadium. After securing a 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur in their last match, most Arsenal fans were confident of a victory in their Champions League opener. However, it was far from a straightforward game.
Facing an Atalanta side who clinched the Europa League trophy just 120 days ago thanks to a 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen was never going to be easy. However, not even the most pessimistic of Arsenal fans would have thought that the Gunners would be this lackluster on the offensive end. This performance only goes on to show just how important Martin Odegaard is to Mikel Arteta’s plan. The Gunners took just six shots during the game, out of which only two were on target. Arsenal's only real scoring opportunity came early in the 13th minute when Bukayo Saka's low-driven free kick forced a save from Atalanta keeper Marco Carnesecchi. On the follow-up, Thomas Partey had a golden chance to put the Gunners ahead, but Carnesecchi stood tall, pulling off another clutch save.
In truth, both teams played it safe, clearly wary of starting their Champions League campaign with a loss. But Arsenal’s defense was rock solid throughout. The only time they truly wobbled was when Ederson danced past Partey and into the box, drawing a clumsy foul from the Ghanaian. The referee had no choice but to point to the spot, handing Atalanta a golden opportunity. Matteo Retegui stepped up and drilled a rocket toward the bottom corner. But David Raya wasn’t having it—he pulled off a fantastic save. As if that wasn’t enough, on the rebound, Retegui sent a header flying toward goal, only for Raya to produce another jaw-dropping save. After the match, Arteta lauded Raya’s heroics. He said, “I witnessed two of the best saves I have probably seen in my career to save us in that moment. He was unbelievable again today.”
Following the penalty drama, Arteta brought on Leandro Trossard and Jorginho. However, the substitutes did little to influence the game. Instead, it was former Chelsea and Juventus player Juan Cuadrado who came the closest to breaking the deadlock. After cutting inside from the wing, the Colombian unleashed a curler from 25 yards out which was just inches away from giving La Dea a deserved lead. But as fate would have it, Arsenal survived the scare to start their Champions League campaign with a crucial point.
Now, they face Manchester City on Sunday in a game that could prove to be crucial for the title run-in. Arsenal’s draw against Atalanta laid bare a glaring problem—Mikel Arteta must address his team’s creativity crisis without Martin Odegaard. With only two days left before a potentially season-defining clash against Manchester City, Arteta is under the gun to find a solution. Can he unlock his side’s attacking potential in time, or will they falter again in this high-stakes showdown?
