During a ceremony in the principality of Monaco, Cristiano Ronaldo was honored by UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin for being the all-time leading scorer in the Champions League.
While the main agenda of the ceremony was to draw the fixtures for the revamped Champions League, UEFA seized the opportunity to celebrate Ronaldo's remarkable career achievement. The former Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus star has scored an astounding 140 Champions League goals in 183 appearances. He currently sits 11 goals ahead of Lionel Messi and 46 goals ahead of Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski, who leads the tally among active players in Europe.
Aleksander Ceferin, UEFA President, had nothing but kind words for Cristiano Ronaldo when he presented the award. He said, “Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the brightest stars in the UEFA Champions League constellation. His extraordinary goalscoring achievements in the competition seem destined to stand the test of time, posing a remarkable challenge for future generations to surpass... His professionalism, work ethic, dedication and ability to shine on the grandest stage are qualities that football players everywhere should aspire to emulate."
Throughout his illustrious career, Cristiano Ronaldo has dominated the Champions League, participating in 18 different campaigns and setting a host of records along the way. His remarkable consistency and longevity have seen him score the most goals in a single season—17 during the 2013-14 campaign—and be the competition’s top scorer for seven seperate seasons, more than any other player. Ronaldo also boasts the longest scoring streak in Champions League history, finding the net in 11 consecutive games. Furthermore, with four goals, Ronaldo also holds the record for most goals in UCL Finals. Additionally, he shares the record for the most hat-tricks in the competition (8), tied with Lionel Messi.
Cristiano Ronaldo has lifted the Champions League trophy five times—once with Manchester United in the 2007/08 season and four times with Real Madrid. In 2017/18, he made history by becoming the first player to win the competition five times since its rebranding in 1992. Ronaldo is also the only player to have scored in three different Champions League finals (2008, 2014, and 2016), cementing his status as a true legend of the tournament. Cristiano Ronaldo has amassed records at will, and Champions League was the stage he shone the brightest. Therefore, it was only fitting that UEFA finally honored "Mr. Champions League" for his unparalleled achievements.
