Manchester United are one of the most decorated clubs in English football. However, their performances in recent years have left a lot to be desired. They have constantly underachieved despite racking up the highest transfer net spend in the Premier League.
So, have can the Red Devils improve their fortunes? According to United legend Cristiano Ronaldo, the answer lies in fixing their mentality. The 39-year-old icon has been openly critical of United’s lack of ambition under head coach Erik Ten Hag. Speaking to his former teammate Rio Ferdinand, Ronaldo didn't mince words about his disappointment with United’s current trajectory and Ten Hag’s approach. He said, “As Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you’re not going to fight to win the league or Champions League. Mentally, you can say maybe we don’t have that potential, but I cannot say that. We’re going to try, you have to try.”
Ronaldo’s comments have resonated with many United fans who believe that a club of their stature should always be in the hunt for top honors. But there are those who think Ronaldo’s remarks might be fueled by his own history with Ten Hag, who benched him before his move to Saudi Arabia. Still, Ronaldo had some advice for Ten Hag—listen to Ruud Van Nistelrooy, the former United star who’s now part of the coaching staff. “If Ten Hag listens to Ruud, maybe he can help himself,” Ronaldo suggested. “The people who understand football are the people who were there in the dressing room. They know how to deal with the players... You cannot rebuild a club without knowledge – not guys who work in the office. The people who understand football are the people who were there. They know how to deal with the players.”
Even after his controversial exit from United in December 2022, following a candid interview with Piers Morgan where he said he felt “betrayed” by the club, Ronaldo’s love for the Red Devils remains strong. He wrapped up his thoughts by saying, “What I wish for Manchester United is what I wish for myself – to be the best team they can be. I love that club… I’m not the kind of guy that forgets the past.” Ronaldo’s words are a call to action—a reminder of what it means to play for Manchester United. Whether Ten Hag heeds this advice or not, the expectation is clear: United should never settle for mediocrity.
