After running through three managers in the last eight months, it finally looks like AS Roma have settled on a new manager. The need for a new manager arose when the Roma hierarchy decided to sack Ivan Juric after he managed to win just one of his last five Serie A games. Now, it looks like former player and manager Claudio Ranieri is about to step into the vacant managerial position at Roma.
Following Juric’s sacking, several managers like Roberto Mancini, Vincenzo Montella, Massimiliano Allegri and Frank Lampard were linked to the Giallorossi. But according to La Repubblica, Vincenzo Montella didn’t reach an agreement with Roma, while Frank Lampard didn’t convince the board, and Massimiliano Allegri was not interested in the role. As a result, the Roma hierarchy has settled for Claudio Ranieri as Roma’s next manager for the foreseeable future. Reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed Ranieri’s arrival in Rome, as he tweeted, “Claudio Ranieri and his lawyers already signed all formal documents for his return to AS Roma as head coach. Back home.”
Rumors of Ranieri’s return started to circulate after Roma’s President and Vice President, Dan and Ryan Friedkin, called the 73-year-old manager to London in order to discuss the possibility of him taking over the reins at Roma. Unfortunately, Ranieri had already announced his retirement in May. However, the allure of managing his boyhood club proved too strong, and Ranieri accepted Friedkin’s proposal. The 73-year-old manager comes into his new job with loads of experience, having started his managerial career in 1986. Ranieri, renowned for his extensive experience and talent for steadying difficult situations, is expected to lead the team until the season's end, with an option to transition into a management role at the club afterward.
This will be Claudio Ranieri’s third spell as the Giallorossi’s manager, each stint with its own unique story. His first tenure from 2009 to 2011 remains etched in the memories of every Roma fan, as Ranieri nearly led the club to a Scudetto. In a thrilling race, Roma fell just short, with Inter Milan seizing the Serie A title by only two points on the final day. Ranieri’s second term, however, was less dramatic. Stepping in for the dismissed Eusebio Di Francesco in March, he managed the team for 12 games before parting ways at season’s end. Though the official announcement hasn’t been made yet, all signs indicate that Ranieri will be leading Roma’s training sessions within the next hours. His experience with teams like Leicester, where he led them to the historic 2016 Premier League title, combined with his deep-rooted connection to Roma, has fans buzzing with excitement. Can the “Tinkerman” turn Roma’s fortunes around?
