This weekend, all eyes are set on one Premier League hotspot – Stamford Bridge. Chelsea are gearing up to host Arsenal in Premier League’s headline clash, and the excitement and anticipation surrounding the game has reached a fever pitch. Fans are counting down the moments to this thrilling showdown for city bragging rights, with these two London powerhouses facing off on Sunday.
After last season’s valiant but ultimately crushing title race—where Arsenal missed out to Manchester City by just two points—expectations were high for the Gunners to be right in the thick of another thrilling title race. But following a recent three-game streak without a win, the Gunners are now firmly in the chasing pack. Already seven points behind league-leaders Liverpool, Mikel Arteta and Arsenal simply can’t afford any more slip-ups if they want to keep their hopes of a first Premier League title since 2004 alive.
And just when they need a boost, they are faced with a high-stakes London derby against Chelsea that promises fireworks. For the Blues, a victory wouldn’t just mean bragging rights; it would give them a three-point edge over Arsenal in the standings. So, with bragging rights, title hopes and pride on the line, which London giant will seize the moment in this clash of the titans?
Many Chelsea fans were left stunned when the club’s hierarchy – led by Todd Boehly – decided to sack Mauricio Pochettino in the summer. Although the Blues hadn’t exactly set the league on fire, many felt Pochettino’s first season showed real progress. He had guided Chelsea to sixth in the Premier League, made it to the FA Cup semis, and narrowly lost a Carabao Cup final to Liverpool. In the eyes of most fans, it was a step up from the previous two disappointing seasons. Yet, Boehly opted to take the club in a different direction, bringing in a relatively unknown figure—Enzo Maresca.
The Italian coach had recently got Leicester City promoted to the Prem again, but managing Chelsea was a completely different ball game. Having said that, after a challenging preseason, Maresca’s Chelsea have started to gain steam. They currently occupy the fourth spot in the Prem standings, and confident wins over Brighton, Newcastle and West Ham have only instilled more belief in Maresca’s project at the Bridge. Therefore, a win over Arsenal would be more than just a big result—it would send a message about Chelsea’s resurgence under Maresca’s leadership. To add fuel to the fire, Chelsea come into the match with some serious momentum after scoring eight past Armenian minnows FC Noah during their midweek Conference League clash. So, Arsenal’s defense must be wary of a free scoring Chelsea side, who have already scored 20 goals – third highest in the Prem this season.
However, Arsenal’s defense would be a formidable opponent for Chelsea’s free scoring attack. The Gunners have conceded just 11 goals so far this season, which is the fourth lowest in the league. Moreover, after dropping points in their previous three Premier League games, Mikel Arteta’s men are undoubtedly fired up to turn things around at Stamford Bridge. Yet, that drive seemed to be non-existent during their midweek UCL tie against Inter Milan. The Nerazzurri claimed a 1-0 win over the Gunners, with Arteta’s men registering just four shots on target from 20 total attempts. It can’t be emphasized enough, but if Arsenal lose at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, they can kiss goodbye to their Prem title hopes for the season. The Gunners have shown resilience in the past, but can they rally when the stakes are sky-high?
Arsenal’s Declan Rice, who spent seven years in Chelsea’s academy, remains a big question mark for this weekend’s showdown due to what’s rumored to be a broken toe. While the Gunners gained Martin Odegaard back midweek after his ankle injury, his return could be timely as Arteta seeks answers to their recent creative struggles. Arteta might just look to slot Odegaard back into the lineup without hesitation.
Elsewhere, former Chelsea player Kai Havertz will need a check-up after a head clash with Inter’s Yann Bisseck on Wednesday, and Riccardo Calafiori (knee), Takehiro Tomiyasu (knee), and Kieran Tierney (hamstring) are all ruled out until after the international break. Additionally, Raheem Sterling is ineligible to play against his parent club.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s head coach Enzo Maresca made the expected 11 changes midweek, though Cole Palmer was notably absent—not just because he’s not part of the Conference League squad but also because he’s still recovering from a Lisandro Martinez tackle last weekend. Maresca hopes Palmer, who’s been called up to the England squad, can shake off the effects in time for the clash against Arsenal, but Jadon Sancho’s availability is also in question due to a knock and illness, while Omari Kellyman is sidelined with a hamstring issue.
Palmer’s impact has been undeniable this season with 12 direct goal involvements (seven goals and five assists)–a Premier League high. But if he can’t start, Maresca has strong options in Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix, who both made their mark midweek with braces against Noah.
The game is scheduled to take place on 10th November 2024 (Sunday) at Stamford Bridge in London. The match will kick off at 10:00 PM (Indian Standard Time).
