Following his breakout season at Chelsea, 22-year-old Cole Palmer has been named England Men’s Player of the Year for the 2023/24 season. This accolade comes despite being left on the bench by Gareth Southgate for all five of England’s game at Euro 2024.
In spite of playing just 146 minutes throughout the tournament, Palmer provided an assist in the semis against Netherlands and scored England’s solitary goal in the final against Spain. Nevertheless, the 22-year-old has pipped Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka – the winner of the previous two editions – for this prestigious accolade. Palmer made his debut for the Three Lions in November 2023 during an international friendly against Malta. Since then, he has earned eight more caps, while scoring two goals.
“Cold” Palmer is the first Chelsea player to win the award since Ashley Cole won it back in 2010. The 22-year-old has been on fire since he joined Chelsea from Manchester City last August. Despite scoring key equalizers in the Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup last season, the Cityzens agreed to sell Palmer, who was a relatively unknown quantity. However, they have been made to regret that decision, as Palmer has become one of the best players in the Premier League.
Since arriving at Chelsea, Palmer has been involved in an impressive 44 league goals—28 goals and 16 assists. That’s more goal contributions than Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe over the same period! The only player ahead of him in Europe’s top five leagues is Harry Kane, with a staggering 53 goal contributions (41 goals, 12 assists). On top of that, Palmer recently made history by becoming the first player ever to score four goals in the first half of a Premier League match, netting four times in just 41 minutes against Brighton on 28th September. Cole Palmer is expected to feature in England’s Nations League ties against Greece and Finland during October’s international break.
